RI Folks who have experience buying car insurance
1. What are the things that I should keep in mind when buying car insurance at the end of one year ? 2. Buying insurance from car showroom was almost 50% costlier than the agents outside for the same list of benefits. Is this normal ? 3. Does anyone have experience in buying car insurance online like PolicyBazar ?

Hey Aswin, Have you had a look at Acko? Haven't filed a claim till now, but the premiums are lower and the customer experience is better than any other competitor.

Don't much about that. Hopefully, somebody else can answer that question.

Keep IDV in mind. This is the total sum insured in case car gets completely totalled
So this should not be too low which sometimes companies may do to reduce premium
Other than that most companies are ok. Compare rates from insurers site as well as coverfox
look for addons if they make sense to you. Zero dep is good if your car has lots of plastic parts and you are new to driving
Roadside assistance is generally good since it doesn’t cost much and will help you with things like flat battery jump start or towing which otherwise cost a lot
Many companies have it built in to main policy (acko does)
Lastly one important things to check is that the insurer should have a cashless tie up with your preferred garage

I usually look at a couple of quotes from the usual suspects - Tata AIG, ICICI and once I have purchased it from Royal Sundaram. I have had to claim only once from Tata AIG and they settled cashless with the garage. So I would say, probably the most important thing is to have cashless with the garage. I usually start getting calls from the insurance companies before renewal and I just compare the policies and pick the one which is most reasonable. In my experience, it has usually always been cheaper to get it from an agent / third party versus purchasing it from the website. The only exception of it was ICICI one year (via their employees) but ICICI is usually more expensive than others. Like Shantanu said, Zero dep is good (I have it) but adds to the cost. So you should take a call on that. The other thing I make sure my insurance has is Engine Protect - which takes care of engine fixing / replacement including if the car gets submerged due to rains / flooding or driving through a low lying area. Again, adds to the cost. If your car is under 3 years old, many insurance companies also offer a Return to Invoice clause (again adds to cost), which will pay you the total amount you spent on your car (invoice amount) if your car gets totalled. Another thing to check.
