Has anyone purchased the new M1 Max MacBook pro? 👀 I just got mine and I'm not sure if it was actually worth it 😆

Did you order it in India and it shipped you this early?
e
I'm a developer so these are my main concerns. I bought a pretty beefed up version with a 32 Core GPU, 32 GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD Pros and Cons 1. Size - I upgraded from a 2019 MacBook pro and I truly miss the thinner form factor. You can truly notice and feel the much thicker body. 2. Ports - Honestly I pretty much adapted to a dongle lifestyle and the addition of the new HDMI and SD card slot means nothing to me. The Mag Safe is a nice addition though.
Honestly, the best buy is the base model with a 10 core M1 Pro and 16 Core GPU However, if you want faster memory speeds, you need to choose the M1 Max with a 24 Core GPU
@flat-morning-91037 I purchased it from Dubai on the launch day.
I actually got it for about 50 k cheaper than in India
f
Ah of course, mine doesn’t arrive till mid december. And I don’t mind the thickness at all, battery life and no thermal throttling are more important to me. I went with M1 Max with 24 Core GPU, rest all same as yours.
e
@flat-morning-91037 That would have been my preferred option as well but they didn't have that in the store and I really wanted to purchase it then 😆
f
Yeah 24 Core ones are not readily available, so would have to wait.
e
@flat-morning-91037 What was the final price you paid ? Did you have any discounts applied ?
d
I got one yesterday from Croma. Bought the base model. But if it was 50k cheaper in Dubai, maybe I should have planned a Dubai trip. 😢 😂

Check this out

What was the final price you paid ?
So I got it 32k cheaper than the price shown on Apple India by applying student discount.
I’m assuming return flight from Indian to Dubai + a day’s stay at simple hotel would still be under 50k? 😂
e
Yes that's an awesome option! @flat-morning-91037 If you still have a .edu email, you can use the student discount
@flat-morning-91037 I didn't have to pay for the tickets . They were free as well 😆

wow! that’s beefy. I’m planning to go for M1 Pro 14" perhaps early next year from my current 16" MBP 2019. what’s your day to day work to justify these specs if you don’t mind me asking?
f
In my case, that 24 core GPU is really optional tbh but I could definitely see myself utilizing 10 core CPU and that 32 GB RAM. I mean just with Slack, Chrome (with DevTools) and VS Code alone we penetrate the RAM.
e
@witty-gigabyte-47737 For me personally, I just needed a 32 GB RAM. Running VMs, Docker, Android Emulators, Chrome, takes up a lot of RAM. Coming to the processor, I chose the M1 Max over the M1 Pro because of the higher memory bandwidth and high res external display support.
c
Interesting to know @eager-glass-72786 I have uncle and few other relatives in Dubai and i’m looking to upgrade 😄 Mine is a late-2013 model with dual graphics. The spec is all good and i’m satisfied. If i want to upgrade now, would the base model you suggested be enough, right? I’m a FE dev but would need support for external monitors.
e
@creamy-dawn-73235 This is the main difference in a nutshell. The base model is more than sufficient simple smile

how’s the battery life for you? And the form factor for 16? I can’t decide between 14/16.
e
@acceptable-summer-68562 • If you prefer working without an external display, I would advice the 16" . ( which is why I chose it as well ) • Battery Life is definitely better on the 16"
a
1. I actually have a bit of remote lifestyle. And I also always have my ipad with me. I currently have a 16 inch and it feels a bit big when I’m working on sofa. All good otherwise. I’m wondering if 14 would feel too small. ugh 2. yeah, more reasons for 16 lol
e
I definitely felt the loss of screen real estate when I briefly switched to a 14" linux machine while I was waiting for Apple to release the M1 Maxs. So yea I can never work on a 14" and the new 16" has spoiled me to not look at a 15" either 😆
l
@eager-glass-72786 you mention you don't feel it may be worth it. Can you explain a bit more as to why that is? What did you upgrade from?
e
Hey @loud-glass-33663 sure. I upgraded from a 2019 16" MacBook Pro with an i9, 16GB of RAM and 512GB SSD I did not have a valid reason to upgrade because I was pretty happy with my MacBook. I upgraded nevertheless because I got a great deal, wanted to future proof and wanted to test the efficiency of the new M1 chips. I'm a developer and for me personally there is no significant advantage after upgrading. After all these machines were never made for devs. They're completely influenced by the film and music industry. • The laptop got thicker and heavier and I truly enjoyed the form factor of the 2019 Macbook, • I miss the touch bar • The SD card slot is of no use to me • The HDMI port is a similar story since I already had all the dongles anyways. ( I still need to use a dongle anyways if I need to plug in a USB 😆 ) • I definitely enjoy the 32GB RAM which is an upgrade from my 16GB RAM. • Build times on some apps have definitely improved but it does not justify my upgrade So if you already have a 2018 or 2019 MacBook pro, I don't think you need to upgrade unless you have a good reason to ( like RAM or something ) . Because as a developer you will not notice any of the improvements other than the increased weight and thickness.

Is there no noticeable improvement to battery life and thermals? As that's been a biggest pain point of Intel MBPs (apart from Keyboard). 🤔
d
I miss the touch bar
I do too.
Is there no noticeable improvement to battery life and thermals?
The thermals are definitely better.
s
using a 2019 maxed out Intel mbp, and my biggest pain points are: the area between the screen and touch bar gets heated really quick when I have slack, basecamp browser and afew more apps open along with CLI tools. Battery is awful. The fans kick in really quick. Hoping these don't exist in the M1 max MBP 🤞
l
@strong-evening-37474 for the heating issue, if you are charging the MBP from the left ports, might be worth trying to charge it from the right ones. I had a similar heating issue: https://apple.stackexchange.com/q/420560/59800
s
@loud-glass-33663 using the right ports from the start since socket aligns with it. Hoping the m1s are like the 2015 and pre models, really long term dependables 🤞
