Has anyone ever tried staying at Airbnb properties at international location while working remotely? I'm just looking for some insights!
m
Yup, what questions do you have?
l
Is it preferable to work remotely from such properties? What kind of experience has it been, in general?
m
Depends (multiple factors and personal preference). I prefer hostels with nice co-working spaces if I am traveling solo. But some hostels could get noisy which it did for me at Paris, I booked a desk at a nearby WeWork. AirBnbs are great as well, the ratings are a huge signal to select one. I had great experience with AirBnbs at internationals locations so far. My only issue was not having the ease of the reception desks like you do at hostels/hotels.

Yes, hostels are a good place to meet new people and make new friends. But if I travel, I'll be traveling with a kid around 6 years of age. And that's why I'm looking at Airbnb from the safety and facility point of view

Ahh, then definitely Hotels and AirBnbs are places to be.

We traveled with a 4 yo (around Italy) and stayed at all AirBNBs. We stayed for a week at multiple places - so it wasn't enough time to settle in AND work. My plan was to put in around 2h / day but even that was difficult to achieve. Stuff I would look for and confirm with the owners are: 1) If they have a work desk and a chair. Multiple if you have other people also working. Or atleast a decent dining table. 2) Good internet. I think AirBNB now has a wifi speed test result option. However, I would confirm if they have wifi inside of the room. We stayed in Tuscany (large farmhouse) and they had wifi only at the reception and outdoors but not inside the room. (Was not working there -- but would have been an issue if I was). Always better to carry a wifi dongle. Most countries will now have a company renting these out from the airport -- or you can get a local SIM. 3) Things for your child to do safely around. If you are running behind them preventing them from climbing dangerous things or jumping into the pool, they you can't get work done 🙃 4) Plenty of space. We had got a studio apartment in Venice which was super tiny. If I had to take a call, it would get really awkward with my 4yo and wife being across the room.

I have done this while staying in Nairobi. but that was for 3 days only. But what I have learned through my travels is to always buy a sim from the airport with good data plan. The speeds on the 4g are good. and use your mobile data to get work done. Don't depend on the provided wifi.

Yes, such experiences are useful because I may start traveling once a year from next year onwards. And Airbnb websites say that they have wifi for sure. But idk how much should I trust them. And yes, carrying a wifi dongal is always a good idea. True. Thank you so much!
@famous-hair-69130 yes. True. Even right now, my wifi sometimes ditches me. So having an extra point for internet connectivity is always a good idea. Thank you so much for sharing your travel experience.
