I recently moved to Samsung S22+ and while I ignored stock Samsung apps for the most part, I tried out Samsung Pay today by adding my credit card there, and I could then use phone to tap to pay at a shopping mart kiosk (just like how tapping the card would work at PoS devices), and it was nice! Too bad that Google Pay still doesn't do it, and Samsung Pay is limited to select Samsung phones only. Is anyone aware of any such app that can leverage NFC and is available on all phones and also works in India?

Google Pay allows doing it. Using OnePlus 6T.

I had Samsung S9 long back and I really liked how it worked seamlessly..

@hallowed-rain-28053 I don't think Google Pay does, it started allowing to add some credit cards but doesn't allow to use them at PoS machines for payments.
h
I use it at times for PoS, it works. But it is limited to some cards yeah. And it works for most PoS but maybe fails at some (faced it only at 1 place until now).

Yes, Google Pay allows to add credit cards and works on PoS devices using NFC, but only in android phones. I am waiting for this feature to come in iPhone.
f
I do have my credit card added in GPay and it even says “Default Tap and Pay” card but I don’t see an option anywhere to activate the card for payment. Does it trigger automatically at Kiosk as long as I have NFC enabled and GPay just open?

I use Google Pay for NFC payments on my S21. You need to tap on the card in Google Pay and once you have the card open, touch the PoS with your phone and the payment will go through.
(off note: a lot of Samsung apps are better than their Google counterparts)

This is the option I don’t find, only place I can see card after adding it is under Profile > Payment Methods > Debit/credit card.
Ok I guess once the card is added, one doesn’t have to do anything besides leaving NFC open, will try in my next store visit https://support.google.com/pay/india/answer/9673903?hl=en#zippy=%2Chow-can-i-tap-pay-after-adding-my-card

I use it in Google Pay. You don't need to do anything extra. Just enable NFC, tap and pay, the screen automatically apperas.
Only the cards which support tokenization can be added. Cannot add prepaid cards, gift cards.

I don't know if the current gen Samsung flagships support one patented feature of Samsung - MST. What you are using is NFC which is supported by most modern POS terminals and many phones as well. Samsung supported this mobile based tap payments way before NFC was even available with POS terminals - by emulating the magnetic signals similar to what would happen if you swiped the card at a NON NFC POS! I have used this a couple of times on my Note 9.
f
Yes I'm aware about MST, and newer Samsung flagships no longer have it as NFC is more prevalent now.

crying in corner with my iphone where I can't even add my credit card let alone NFC 🥲

@strong-evening-37474 I would still prefer iPhone over Android, it is that I needed a good phone before next iPhone is available. 😄

@strong-evening-37474 use both (like me) 😛

So happy to hear so much love for Samsung Pay. I worked as a PM for India and other emerging markets. I was leading it between 2016-2018 but a lot of the decisions you are discussing above were conscious calls by the team. MST technology was acquired knowing that NFC prevalence for still less in US and most non-European markets back then. While google and apple wanted you to tap the mobile and payment happens without obvious user action. In our user tests we found that many people found this confusing. So we chose to encourage people to swipe up, choose a card of their choice and then choose to pay. This was habit forming behavior and allowed for user choice of card at retailer. Didn’t know they removed MST. Makes sense in 2022 due to cost reasons (hardware and security certification). Glad you folks are still enjoying it.

Exactly! Gpay (even for being a de facto UPI app at this point) hiding this from UI leads to zero discoverability. Not to mention that if OS (certain OEM ROMs are quite aggressive with this) has suspended Gpay in background due to lack of use, automatic pop-up may not even trigger.

The challenge in India with any mobile based POS payments is the perception of fraud at merchants. At most places the turnover is so high that any training that people did was lost in couple of months. Back in 2016/17 we requested RBI to have PIN less flow for tokenized cards; but due to demonetization and focus on UPI this was never picked. Finally now you see most merchants asking for tap & pay as there is no PIN entry required and it saves their time. But that same thing with mobile is still not common knowledge so if user faces friction once or twice they will stop paying with mobile. And Google etc see the usage numbers and won’t prioritize any changes here.

Off-topic question - Does S22 support call recording in India? I know it supports call recording in general but it's geolocked so want to be sure it's available in India.
f
@faint-energy-11966 yes it does.

Does it say out loud to both the parties that "This call is now being recorded" like other android phones?
