Copy the link to the message and share it with yourself in Slack DM

Use the

Add to Saved Items

in slack, which is present for all the messages. In my experience, even the messages I've saved which were older than the 10000 limit of our channel are visible to me in

saved items

. Also one trick for saving threads is, if you save the OP message, you'd have the entire thread, else you'd have only that particular message saved.
