Has anyone applied for a Swiss visa recently? Were the slots available? As per VFS site, the earliest appointment is about a month in future, but local visa agents are saying the slots are unavailable. Any idea?

I don’t think there is much need for an agent to get Schengen visa. The process is mostly well documented on vfs website. If you see an appointment just book it.
