the foreman docs are quite good. foreman can do all sorts of things but it can also act as a report processor and ENC. so puppetserver sends reports to foreman and you can view them, similar to puppetboard and PE Console. but foreman has way more active developers and a working plugin system, a public CI system and it's easy to contribute.
