If I'm understanding what you're saying, I think that's the mismatch. Puppet assumes `ensure =&gt; latest` means something very specific. The provider must be able to determine what the <https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet/blob/832424710993567a0bdc942cddae9b32d66d7e4d/lib/puppet/type/package.rb#L161-L177|latest available version is> and if the package is not insync? then the provider must have the <https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet/blob/832424710993567a0bdc942cddae9b32d66d7e4d/lib/puppet/type/package.rb#L116-L132|"upgradeable" feature and be able to update to the latest version>
