all infrastructure components must be the same OS
you would have to migrate, by standing up a clone of the system on the new OS and restoring backups to it
j
Our replica was already running on Ubuntu. So they are the same
m
im not sure how you could have installed an ubuntu replica against a centos primary, this may not be the issue however
the exact error message could just mean communication was interrupted, if you run
puppet infrastructure status
is the replica reporting ok
also do you have a puppet enterprise licence? if so opening a ticket at support.puppet.com will get you some help from our brilliant support team
j
I'm not even at the stage of adding the replica in the cluster. You need to have the puppet agent installed on the futur replica to be able to add it in the cluster first. So basically, it's just a simple node for now.
m
So you have an Ubuntu primary, and an ubuntu normal agent, thats installed and working correctly? and you cant orchestrate it, the logs on the agent looks like it is connected to a broker, does it stay connected or does it constantly reconnect?
Are you in a position to open a ticket with our team? i can do what i can here, but as a Puppet Enterprise Customer you can leverage the official support to get a more timely resolution
j
Yes, I'll open a ticket to the support
m
cool, any problems with that process DM me!
j
Thanks ! 🙂

@Marty Ewings ah damn, replica and primary need the same OS? I need to do some RHEL 7->8 upgrades and was hoping I can add a RHEL 8 replica to RHEL 7 primay, promote replica to primay, then redo the old primary
m
yeah as do compilers, it all comes down to the packages in the installer being for one distro, and they are needed to share round the other components
b
mhm ok
is there any supported way for major PE or OS upgrades without/with little downtime?
alternative idea was to spin up a new environment, import old CA, update loadbalancer to redirect to the new env
m
yeah thats a standard migration, how our PS usually does it
b
okay, thanks for the quick feedback!
j
Well, it can work. We managed to have a CentOS 8 (Master) and Ubuntu (Replica) working together. There's a little trick to do, you need to push the packages of your OS on the master and change a symlink.
