If you're running PE 2019.8.10, 2021.5 or newer, the

puppet_enterprise

module can configure the default flight recording: https://support.puppet.com/hc/en-us/articles/4689460877719-Use-Java-Flight-Recorder-to-record-and-share-diagnostic-data-with-Support-to-help-debug-performance-issues-in-Puppet-Enterprise

Otherwise, you can use something like the following:

  JFR.configure stackdepth=128

/opt/puppetlabs/server/apps/java/lib/jvm/java/bin/jcmd \
  $(systemctl show pe-puppetserver -p MainPID|cut -d= -f2) \
  JFR.start name=pcp-broker settings=profile disk=true duration=2h filename=/var/log/puppetlabs/puppetserver/pcp-broker.jfr

That configures a 2 hour recording. See the following for all options:

Setting the output to

filename=/var/log/puppetlabs/puppetserver/blah.jfr

also means the recording will be included in

puppet enterprise support

collection.

is relatively small on the hosts, is there an option to tell the support command to collect a custom directory?

The support script can output to a custom directory via the

-d

flag if the default location of

/var/tmp/

does not have enough space. But, the location in which the support script expects to find log files,

/var/log/puppetlabs/

is not configurable.
