Hi everyone. I’ve been reading up on all the docs ...

Hi everyone. I’ve been reading up on all the docs and messing around locally for some time now, and there are still some high level concepts that i’m having a hard time wrapping my head around. Hoping I could get some insight/help here! I have a repo with
src
and
prisma
directories, as described in this tutorial (https://www.prisma.io/tutorials/build-a-graphql-server-with-prisma-ct02/). I am using Heroku to deploy my project to using
prisma deploy
. My first question is, do I deploy both prisma and also my server to the same Heroku app? Like, do I do a
git push heroku master
from my project folder and expect the
GraphQLServer
to run and accept requests?
l
No. Prisma is a server, e.g. your Prisma server on Heroku. It's not in your directory.
prisma deploy
communicates with your Prisma server instance on Heroku (or wherever) through its management API
r
so there is the Prisma Server and then also a GraphQL Server, right?
i have an
index.js
file that starts up a graphql-yoga server and is using the prisma bindings. just not clear to me how the deployment of the 2 work. do I deploy them separately to 2 different heroku instances?
l
Exactly right. Yes, they will need two separate instances. Prisma is an app (a bunch of Scala code) that lives outside of your GraphQL server.
r
Ah hah! Ok thanks. Got a bit confused cause it was all in one repo
l
Not a problem, it is confusing! I had to look at the Prisma repo and Prisma docker hub before it set in. Assuming that you created the Heroku instance via Prisma Cloud, behind the scenes a Docker script tells Heroku to call out to Docker Hub, download Prisma, and run it. The files on your computer simply control that application.
