Hello everybody, can you please tell if it’s possible to remove the constraint for the number of clients? It’s for the testing.
Error querying the database: db error: FATAL: sorry, too many clients already
r
What are you using Prisma with? Next.js?
j
No, I’m currently working on just the API layer - Prisma & Apollo Server. In tests I make queries with ApolloClient to the API endpoint. This error occurs if I run all the tests. I can run a few test suites without this error, but I’d like to be able to run all tests too.
r
Are you running
prisma.$disconnect()
after each test suite?
Something like this: https://github.com/ryands17/nexus-introspection/blob/main/tests/helpers.ts So you’ll never run out of connections then.
j
Thank you, I’ll take a look. Also, I run
npx prisma migrate reset --force
before and after each test suite. I just thought that I don’t have that many tests and nevertheless the API basically stopped working. How to properly manage that situation in the production ? I can imagine that many requests to the API from real users, and definitely don’t want the API to crash.
Basically I test the API, just make queries with apollo client as if it’s just some user. Why do I need to run
prisma.$disconnect()
? I don’t use prisma in tests (only resetting db). I wanted the tests to not be tied to the tech I’m using in the backend. Just simple queries with apollo client and check the result.
j
What command exactly is giving you this error message then?
r
Basically I test the API, just make queries with apollo client as if it’s just some user.
This must be running your server under the hood right? This opens a connection to the database and will not be closed automatically after the test is complete. So you need to call
prisma.$disconnect()
so that the connection is freed and there’s no connection overload.
Also, I run
npx prisma migrate reset --force
 before and after each test suite.
I wouldn’t personally recommend this and advise to run each test suite against a new schema so that test suites can also run in parallel.
j
So you need to call
prisma.$disconnect()
 so that the connection is freed and there’s no connection overload.
But how should I handle it in the production, when users are making queries to the API ? It can have the same error, so I need to call
prisma.$disconnect()
too ? How to properly manage it ?
What command exactly is giving you this error message then?
After certain amount of tests this error occurs in all the next tests with different models
Copy code
ApolloError:
    Invalid `prisma.constant.create()` invocation:

      Error querying the database: db error: FATAL: sorry, too many clients already
`Invalid `prisma.constant.create()`` , `Invalid `prisma.user.create()`` , `Invalid `prisma.company.create()`` , etc.
r
But how should I handle it in the production, when users are making queries to the API ? It can have the same error, so I need to call
prisma.$disconnect()
 too ? How to properly manage it ?
This will not happen in production as your server will be running always unlike tests that end after a specific time.
j
Tests are not standalone in my case. I just start the server(API) and after that I run tests against an API endpoint. So it seems like in production the same might happen.
r
So all tests run against the same endpoint? Could you share how you have setup the tests?
j
Yes, later I plan to automise all the testing, but for now need to first refactor all the code to use prisma2 instead of prisma1(with prisma1 there wasn’t that problem) and check the transition with an existing test base. 1. I start the API server manually 2. I set up apolloClient instance which points to the api endpoint(http://localhost:4000/api) 3. I run queries through apolloClient against the API Here is an example query
Copy code
const CHANGE_ORDER_STATUS_MUTATION = gql`
    mutation ChangeOrderStatusMutation($changeOrderStatusWhere: OrderWhereUniqueInput!, $changeOrderStatusData: OrderChangeStatusInput!) {
      changeOrderStatus(where: $changeOrderStatusWhere, data: $changeOrderStatusData) {
        slug
        title
        description
        comment
        status
        parentSalesDomain {
          slug
        }
      }
    }
    `;

    let result;
    try {
      result = await client.mutate({
        mutation: CHANGE_ORDER_STATUS_MUTATION,
        variables: {
          changeOrderStatusWhere: { slug: orderSlug },
          changeOrderStatusData: { status: orderStatusUpdated }
        }
      })
    } catch (error) {
      errorLog(error);
    }
So basically tests are fully separated from the API. Tests are run against an actual server using dev database(just local postgres container).
@Ryan, can you please help with this issue ? Also, this error appears on
reset
command too.

r
Could you share a link to your repo so that I can test?
j
I’m afraid it’s a private company repo and I just have no rights to share it or add collaborators. Would you be able to suggest something without diving into the code ?
Also this prints the server:

And this warning

warn(prisma-client) Already 10 Prisma Clients are actively running.
r
Based on your message, I’m pretty sure either there are multiple clients defined in the app or the tests are causing new clients to be created in some manner.
j
Maybe you know what is the problem now ? Sorry for a lot of questions.
Yes, thanks a lot, it was my stupid mistake.
context
argument to the
ApolloServer
is a function that is called with every request, I thought it’s called once at the start and then resulting object is passed by. And I was creating an instance of the prisma client in that context function. But now when I’m creating prismaClient once, I get this error when I run several test suites.

Never seen that one before, definitely open an isuse in our repo please.
r
You can open an issue here 🙂
j
I’ve opened this issue. https://github.com/prisma/prisma/issues/7678 The odd part is: I thought this error occurs when I run a lot of tests, but now I ran 1 file 4 times: 1. tests pass 2. tests pass 3. this error 4. tests pass
👍 1
r
Would this test work if you create a sample project with random models (not from your app) but the same test setup and check?
If that’s the case then we could take a look at the code as well 🙂
j
Well, the messages get weirder I’ll try to create a sample project and replicate the behaviour

This is your database giving up probably.
Overloaded, broken, invalid state - something. Prisma is just relaying the message it gets itself when it tries to run a simple query.

After searching a little bit (it is Ruby related but seems similar) - https://medium.com/carwow-product-engineering/activerecord-error-cached-plan-must-not-change-result-type-aca72cdef504 The reason might be
npx prisma migrate reset
command at the start and at the end of each test suite. It resets the db and then apply migrations, but postgres cache some queries, and at some point it can be that cached database commands are wrong due to running migrations or something like that (cached queries cannot be applied to the current database stage). Or the reason cannot be in the reset command ? I had these logs from docker postgres:
ERROR: cached plan must not change result type
and
ERROR: cache lookup failed for type 899836

Hm that would be interesting, never cause this one afaik.
Do you have a reliable reproduction of this?

This is good timing, we just got another report of similar error messages. We'll definitely investigate, thanks!

Thanks a lot, I’d appreciate any feedback after you’ve looked into it. Have a good day )
Hello guys, I’ve seen this comment that I can use
&statement_cache_size=0
as a workaround. But for me it doesn’t solve the problem and I haven’t found this argument in the docs. https://github.com/prisma/prisma/issues/7678#issuecomment-864967237
Sorry, figured it out.

What was going on?

I was just modifying the connection url in the prod env file. My mistake. Also there is minor typo in the comment
&statment_cache_size=0
should be
&statement_cache_size=0
. Wanted to ask where this command is comming from ? In the prisma docs it’s not mentioned, also PostgreSQLl format doesn’t seems to describe it.
j
Fixed the comment.
This is a new parameter for Prisma, undocumented for now as it is pretty new and should not really have to be used.
(But it is handy to have around when something like the bug you are experiencing pops up)

Got it. Anyway thanks a lot, I can finally run the tests without any delay now, so it’s a lifesaver for me.
