I’m following along with the example for apollo using GraphQL, however I’m using nextjs (for SSR) and when I use the email auth system I have to use the networkinterfacemiddleware.. (this checks for a token for athenticated requests) however I receive an error on the frontend that localstorage is not defined and this is probably because localStorage is not available in Node.. but I’m stuck at how to resolve this and not sure if this channel is the right place for the answer.

also the example without auth works as expected, however as soon as I start adding the auth part I run into the problem with localStorage

you should take a look at <https://github.com/luisrudge/next.js-auth0> this example show how to use cookies instead of localstorage to store the token
