you could send some business man over there for a clean exit graphcool πŸ‘€
a
Huh?
d
look for a acquisition, since they are building a quite similar product, I believe there might be an opportunity to leverage what GraphCool has been doing with GraphQL's technology to empower the massive-scale company that AWS is.
IMHO
(wasn't referring to your Android issue btw, never seen that 'null' stuff)
a
No I got that πŸ™‚ But I respectfully disagree about AWS. I believe that what AWS does with AppSync does not fully overlap with what Graphcool is offering.
d
It's perfectly fine to disagree with my opinion πŸ˜„. No, you are correct, it doesn't. However, one thing we can't deny is that they have the biz part figured out almost perfectly, and even if it isn't the same, it's GraphQL, and people already using AWS for their products will at least try their service.
I'm sure it has cross their mind since the news came out
l
@Dukuo I'm with you, though I think there's no question that Google's called in the last week
d
that would be game changing for GraphCool
although I wonder if the open source stand would be the same after being acquired by either of the Goliaths @lawjolla
l
It's a good question. I think it's much more likely with Google
d
true that
l
I think AppSync both hurt and helped their exit. It's put the pressure on Google and Microsoft. But now that AWS is in the space, it's also limited the buyers to Google and Microsoft
d
well I do hope that Google wins for sure lol
wouldn't want to have a Microsoft Learning Center for GraphQL

Hi @Dukuo & @lawjolla! I appreciate your thoughts but there is nothing to worry about! I’m happy to share some more information about this. We’ve been aware of AWS’ move with AppSync for quite a while which has been a great confirmation for our plan to go open-source. AppSync and Graphcool are very different products/technologies and cater to different use cases. It will even be possible to use them together. We’re planning to write up a more in-depth comparison of AppSync and Graphcool, so people can better understand the differences and use cases. Please let me know if you have any further questions. P.S. We have no intention of joining forces with Google or Microsoft any time soon. πŸ™‚
d
anytime soon πŸ‘€
jk, thanks for the clarification @schickling
l
Thanks @schickling ! I'm an entrepreneur, so I like talking about such issues. I wish I were in your shoes! But please don't take my speculation as gossip or ill will. I love GraphCool. I love business. I love thinking about business strategy. And AWS annoys me πŸ™‚
a
And AWS annoys me
I'm definitely with you on that!
d
I can't find a reason why AWS would be annoying lol @agartha @lawjolla could you elaborate ?
l
@Dukuo from my perspective, it tries to suck you into its overpriced ecosystem from which you cannot escape. And I hate the nickel and diming. I have a managed LAMP box running Node, Elixir, MySQL, Postgres, and Mongo with dual 3.5ghz Xenon processors and 16gb of ram. I pay $140/month That would be more than my mortgage on AWS.
(Not to mention IAM hell in AWS) I understand the argument for AWS. In some situations, it makes sense. But even though it gives the illusion of modular solutions, they are all interconnected and hard to escape. I submit that if you build a great AppSync app, you'd have a hard time migrating away from AWS ever. That's annoying. And frightening.
a
Let alone running into an issue and requesting AWS to fix/change it. They are notoriously ignoring customer feedback/requests. They're simply too big.
And yes, I'm not a fan of IAM either...
l
... and unabashedly ripping off Apollo
a
Yeah, that wasn't a nice move of either Apollo or AWS. Apollo calls it 'powered by Apollo', which it isn't. And AWS just forked half of their repos and changed the copyright to Amazon.
d
Yeah the ecosystem prison is true.. Don't get me wrong, i'm all Graphcool and have no plans to move to AppSync (maybe ever), i'm just waiting for GraphCool to reach the AWS Marketplace to test some stuff i'v been wanting to implement. What IaaS are you using @lawjolla @agartha ?
l
@Dukuo I'm a dinosaur running on supported bare metal at Liquid Web telling the IaaS kids to get off my lawn

GETTOUTAHERE you damn IaaS fanboi
l
haha! But... I will be hosting with / through GraphCool. I'm a believer in supporting those that make tools for us

I have nothing against a good ol' VPS, but I won't keep up this conversation if you use something like cPanel at this day and age !
LOL
l
Dedicated server and CPanel / WHM, wha whaaaat
πŸ‘‹ 1
a
I agree, I draw the line at cPanel!
☝️ 1
l
... the problem is I'm grandfathered in at $140/month for a gigantic private server, so I just make it work
a
You could start your own AWS on that thing πŸ™‚
