Hi, one of the selling points for permit is that it supports OpenTelemetry as noted here https://docs.permit.io/concepts/differentiator-checklist/#telemetry--observability In my GCP logs explorer I'm not seeing any span or trace information from the PDP logs that I would expect if it were following the OpenTelemetry format. We got some improvement by setting: OPAL_LOG_FORMAT="" OPAL_LOG_SERIALIZE=true Is there a doc for getting the PDP outputting OpenTelemetry formatted logs?

Hi @Jack Muller, I'm an AI assistant for Permit.io. I'll analyze available sources and get back to you shortly.

Hey, thanks for reaching out ! It seems our team is a little busy right now, a human will be with you within the next hour or so. In the meantime, can I help you ?

The PDP does support Datadog APM tracing, which you can enable via
PDP_ENABLE_MONITORING=True
(or equivalently
OPAL_ENABLE_DATADOG_APM=True
) . (1) For log serialization, you're on the right track with
OPAL_LOG_SERIALIZE=True
, which serializes log records as JSON format to STDERR (useful for log aggregation services) . However, I don't have documentation specifically covering OpenTelemetry-formatted log output from the PDP. The sources mention that Permit "Supports OpenTelemetry for distributed tracing" (2) and has "OpenTelemetry hooks" (3) , but detailed configuration steps for enabling OpenTelemetry tracing/spans in PDP logs aren't covered in the available documentation. You may want to check the OPAL documentation for additional configurations, as the PDP uses OPAL under the hood and all OPAL configurations are available with the
OPAL_
prefix. (1) * To help our engineers investigate this further, could you share: 1. Which Workspace / Project / Environment you're using 2. What calls you're performing (SDK code or CURL) 3. Which PDP version

It's a helpful start from the agent but hoping to get pointed toward some examples of successful OpenTelemetry setup, thanks!
o
OpenTelemetry is supported by OPA - the policy as code engine within the PDP https://www.openpolicyagent.org/docs/monitoring We don’t currently provide dedicated examples for this advanced configuration

Thanks @Or Weis, is this advanced configuration compatible with using
permitio/pdp-v2
docker image?
