<!here> Takeaways from "B Corp 101 with Futureproof" ℹ️ Huge thank you everyone who was able to attend last Tuesday’s workshop delivered by Tom Wilford, Founder of Futureproof! Futureproof helps companies become B Corp, and make it easy to track and improve ESG (environmental, social and governance) impact. We're also pumped to say that Futureproof is the newest Operations Nation partner! 🎉 This means: • As our community member, you'll get special access: if you have any questions about B Corp, you can book office hours with Tom here 💬 • You’ll also get a 10% discount on the setup fee for Futureproof's services 💰 • We want to be transparent that for every new client that comes through the community, ON will accept a referral fee from Futureproof which will be invested straight back into the community #buildinginpublic ❤️ For those of you who couldn't make it, here’s a quick summary of the answers to our most burning questions about B Corp: • What is B Corp? Why go for it? Certified B corporations are a new kind of business. They meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. While the legally binding certification is tough to achieve, and comes with the need to continually improve, it’s becoming very popular, with over 4500 companies in the community (700 in the UK!). By joining this growing community, you can accelerate your growth, increase your revenue, and attract top talent. • What’s the process of becoming a B Corp? Any business (with few exceptions) can apply to complete the B Impact Assessment (BIA), which covers 5 areas of your business over roughly 200 questions. You need 80/200 points to certify for 3 years, after which you will need to re-certify, meaning you’ll need to improve your score. There is also an annual certification fee, which is dependent on your annual revenue. From start to finish, the process to become a B Corp can take anywhere from 1-3 years (depending on size, complexity, and level of support). Staying a B Corp is just as important as becoming one: keep maintaining and improving your policies, practices, data, and training! • Why does certifying as a B Corp usually fall on the shoulders of operations professionals? Becoming successful in B Corp typically requires you to have knowledge in five categories: governance, workers, community, environment, and customers, to work on the Handbook, the Ops Manual, data collection, data tracking, and team engagement. This means you’ll need to be able to see the big picture and the small details, coordinate others, maintain as a future process, and simply *put, get sh*t done.* Sounds like ops folk, doesn’t it? ;) • How can we best prepare for it? ◦ 🌟 Create leadership buy-in from day one: It’s important to have leaders understand why you’re doing the work and what you’re actually doing. ◦ 👥 Form the dream team: Create a team of 3-4 people, who are passionate and can sign off on stuff. ◦ ⌛ Secure your time on the project: Dedicate a set amount of time to B Corp each week, don’t let it become a side project. Omnipresent is an Employer of Record (EOR) that helps companies hire remote workers by providing tools and support to manage all aspects of the employment relationship, from onboarding to off-boarding, benefits to expenses. We're also excited to share that Omnipresent is the newest Operations Nation partner! party cat This means: • 50% off the set-up fee and 50% off the monthly management fee for the first employee, and 15% off monthly management fees for all subsequent employees if you use this link 💰 • We want to be transparent that for every new client that comes through the community, ON will accept a referral fee from Omnipresent, which will be invested straight back into the community #buildinginpublic ❤️ For those of you who couldn't make it, here’s a quick summary of the answers to our most burning questions about hiring abroad: • What operating models can we choose from when it comes to remote hiring? The model that will work best for you likely depends on the number of employees you want to hire from that particular country. ◦ Hiring contractors - Recommended for clearly defined projects ▪︎ This is a quick, convenient, cheap solution - so long as you’re extremely careful. Most governments look at what the relationship actually is, not what is written in the contract. A good rule of thumb: if you were to hire this person locally, would they be an employee? If the answer is yes, then you may be taking a huge risk by engaging with them as a contractor and can face some serious consequences. ◦ Setting up your own entity - Recommended for 10+ employees ▪︎ Can cost from £10–50k in upfront professional fees and initial share capital requirements. ▪︎ Can cost £5–20k/year in ongoing professional fees for filings and resident director costs. Can take over 6 months to get set up. ▪︎ Once set up, you need a local employment lawyer, an accountant to manage the ongoing needs of the company, and a payroll provider. ◦ Employer of Record - Recommended for 1-10 employees • What's an Employer of Record (EOR)? ◦ An EOR employs your international teams locally, providing compliant employment contracts, a local entity, and ongoing HR support. They handle all of the complexity of local taxes, pay your entire team’s salary, taxes and benefits in a single invoice, in your local currency. They also ensure your team has access to a full benefits package, managing a network of pension and benefits providers globally so you don’t have to. ◦ Operationally: A Framework Agreement for services is set up between your company and the global EOR organisation. Then your international team member(s) enter into a locally compliant Employment Contract with the local EOR entity. You retain control and responsibility of your team member on a day to day basis. 💡 For more tips, check out our video of the event on

hi! Looking for recommendations 👀 My Finance Manager is a first-time start-up employee after a career break of about 15 years. She came to me for some advice on meetups and events she could attend to help her navigate the start-up environment better. I try to give her context on the day-to-day on the many normal rollercoasters of a startup but I would like her to feel empowered to go and learn and network. Does anyone know of any general "start-up life" events or something maybe finance-related? I've had a bit of a search but a lot of it seems to be mostly directed at founders. Any advice super appreciated!
