Hello everyone! I’m a new contributor to OpenHands and I am excited to contribute to such an amazing tool! I am currently exploring issue #17205 (“Token Chart for AI Models”) on GitHub: github.com/OpenHands/OpenHands/issues/17205. The issue appears to involve both agent-side token accounting and a new UI component within Agent Canvas. I’d like to confirm whether this is a suitable first issue for someone new to the codebase so any guidance or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hey, welcome around! I'm not sure we know very well how that “token chart” should work… the
ready-for-dev
label is applied deterministically, only to the format, not the contents, it’s a bit simple for now. That said… The way it could work is to use a small model to analyze history after each turn, and separate it into ‘logical tasks’ and show a token breakdown. The alternative would be to show ALL tool calls and token after each, which is easier to do and harder to figure out for the human reading it. There’s also another orthogonal question: is this what a custom ‘app’ page could do? I would love it if you would be willing to dig into that, perhaps… Ask your agent what are ‘apps’ in OpenHands - you can create an app with a custom page, showing tokens breakdowns, and integrate it into the menu just like the defaults ‘Customize’ and all that
Either way, these are just quick questions, nothing baked… Would love to know your thoughts!

Hey @calm-artist-7206 thanks for getting back! I really like both of your ideas and I am thinking of doing versions of the token chart. First, we can get the token analysis to work without a model. The goal for the first version is to make the token analysis legible for a human to read it. Once thats solid, then the LLM-based layer can be built for the summarization of logical actions. Thats how I'd approach instead of building everything at once. As for the custom "app" page I am currently investigating where the the token chart could fit in and how. To clarify, when you mean that do you mean the Apps beta feature -> docs.openhands.dev/openhands/usage/agent-canvas/canvas-extensions ?
I looked into building custom apps and its quite amazing what you can do with it. Essentially I can build out the token chart right away and have it posted as an extension. I think its a valuable extension that I'd love to pursue! Once I ship the extension I (or a maintainer) can close the issue by linking users to the extension.

That sounds great, by all means, you’re most welcome to go ahead

Thank @calm-artist-7206 for the green light! I'll get to development and get back. Is there a specific channel in which i can post my implementation in?
