Hey, how can I make an automation to use an mcp server ive configured in agent-canvas itself? Im trying by prompting but its just updating the MD file > Perfect! āœ… Updated the automation prompt to use `linear_mcp`:
q
Are you asking the agent to use a prompt based automation, or a custom automation? Prompt based automations should inherit your mcp settings by default, and if not there may be a regression
t
An automation Ive created previously prompting. Its not inheriting the access to the mcps from what I can tell from my usage

q
does the automation dispatch properly? if so can you look inside a conversation and see whether the agent managed to access mcps at all or if it missing entirely
t
Ive tried prompting again being little bit more explicit and it said Done! āœ… The automation has been updated: Summary: • Deleted: Old automation (ID:`3c858f56-1d83-4260-9410-842fdb9bb735`) • Created: New automation with linear_mcp plugin (ID:`09c73265-3bd3-47a7-9723-221bd9d468d4`) The new automation now explicitly loads the
linear_mcp
MCP server, giving it full access to Linear MCP tools. When triggered by the
IssueLabel
event with the
ai-fix
label, it will use the linear_mcp tools to query and interact with Linear. but the automation still doesnt have it wired
Yeah Ive tried running it several times and it just ignores the mcp and tries directly curling the linear api
This is the conversation
q
Gotcha, can you ask the agent to download the tarball for the automation and can you share the code file that it downloads here I can inspect the automation code more closely
t
It attempts to create a python script to gather the issue data instead of using the mcp

q
and also send a screenshot of your mcp page

q
and what version of canvas are you running?
t
1.5.2
I think even when im just starting a new chat and prompting directly, I cant use the installed mcp
Its triggering the skill but not the mcp, maybe they are conflicting?
[me prompting myself in a new conversation] Its weird, even if I have disabled the skill its using it anyway
q
yep something seems off here, would you mind opening a github issue with all these screenshots and details šŸ™ i can jump on it soon also just to confirm you're using openhands as your main agent (and not claude, codex, etc)?
my hunch is that the mcp config shape changed recently and automations weren't updated properly to account for the new shape, resulting in mcp configs being dropped separately the skills disabling not being respected is another issue

github.com/OpenHands/agent-canvas/issues/1931 @modern-fireman-99755 created this issue, is this something you've seen in the past or familiar with the issue?
m
I'm not super familiar with MCP. But we had a big refactor of them last week. I suppose is a regression.
t
Any suggested/recommended workaround?
