We have a PR to improve the Add a Backend model(#1818). One of the options is to set the server type so you can use App Server vs Agent Server. Right now its Type: Local/Cloud but that confused me doing the review. Would Agent Server / App Server be clear enough with a tooltip or does anyone have other ideas?
Quick mockup example
e
I'm not sure App Server is defined well enough. I am not exactly sure what it means in this context
Agent Server is somewhat more defined (since we reference it in Agent canvas docs), but I wonder if we need to be explicit
h
I think it would be if you've set up your own OpenHands remotely
Like cloud
e
Oh - i found
Local / Cloud
more self-explanatory 🤷
h
Add Remote Backend > Choose Local type?
w
We should be able to auto-detect this
We don't really need the user to specify
If we want to give them names, I'd call them "Agent Server" and "Sandbox Server"
Definitely strange that you choose "Remote backend" on the left instead of "Local backend", then select type "Local" in the screenshot above 😅
Why do we have different treatments for "Local agent server" and "Remote agent server"? it should work exactly the same....
Maybe just the extra tips for how to set up a domain?

Links to different docs as well

IMO the better structure here would be: • Left selector ◦ OpenHands Cloud ◦ Agent Server ▪︎ Local/Remote ◦ Sandbox Server ▪︎ Local/Remote
i.e. invert the two choices
h
I see the left selection as 'where'. One of the specific options is the OpenHands Cloud. Then a local backend, a remote backend, and maybe add in Modal since we have it documented in docs? I'm a bit hesitant on making Sandbox so front and center without at least a doc for it (which may just mean we need the doc now)
w
Yeah I'd hold back "Sandbox" until we're confident in it
IMO "What" is more important and relevant to the user than "Where"
and "What" is going to drive what sorts of values/inputs you're going to surface; "where" just surfaces different docs
c
FWIW
Agent Server
/
App Server
seems very clear to me. (of course, we need to document it no matter what name)
(to note, I think we didn't merge Christopher's PRs as yet)
I see the left selection as 'where'.
So do I, TBH, ... I think that is probably the user's first thought
a remote backend, and maybe add in Modal
Modal is an option in Remote, isn't it?
h
Yep, it is. But if we switched it to what instead of where I was thinking Modal would be an additional "what". Which feels a bit off from how I also think of it

On another note, I think this isn't necessary 🤔 47 occurrences of "enterprise". In my opinion, mixing enterprise stuff in has consequences, such as • for individuals, disincentive to contribute • for individuals, likelihood to interpret stuff not working as caused by lack of interest, or worse • for enterprises, indifferent. Extremely unlikely that it makes any difference for decision makers.
