Hi, beware: complete beginner here. I run a local Forgejo instance, and thought it would be interesting to try out Openhands with that. I started Openhands as a docker container (with the most recently built image off main-branch, ghcr.io/openhands/agent-canvas:sha-0d74e3c). I login to its web interface and configure Codex as agent. I then click Customize -> MCP Servers to hook it up to Forgejo, but I don't see an option for it in the library. I saw that PR #11111 with Forgejo integration was merged sep 25, 2025, so I have high hopes to get this working. Any tips from someone who managed to get this working?

Hey 👋 Forgejo isn't an
MCP
server, so you won't find it in the
MCP
library. PR #11111 added it as a first-class Git provider, i.e., same category as GitHub and GitLab, so it's configured in the integrations section

Hi, thanks for your reply. Hm, I see. Maybe it could be useful for Openhands devs with some complete beginner feedback on using the interface here, since I expect the developers have seen it a million times and have a hard time seeing it with fresh eyes so to speak. I now set out to find the integration configuration section. I click Customize in the top left bar. It gives me three sections: Skills, MCP servers and Plugins, so this must be the wrong place since I don't see an integrations section. What I do see under MCP server section is Github, which wrongly lead me to believe that this was the place where Forgejo would also be, since they are both git forges. (See screenshot). I then click on the gear symbol down on the left. I reveals a number of sections, of which none is integrations, so this must be the wrong place too. (See screenshot) I then realise that maybe you are not supposed to configure integrations from the GUI, but rather a config file, and start searching the documentation web, for example these pages: docs.openhands.dev/openhands/usage/settings/integrations-settings docs.openhands.dev/openhands/usage/run-openhands/local-setup docs.openhands.dev/openhands/usage/cloud/github-installation But it turns out they don't point me in the direction of a local config file neither, nor provide the information I need for my task. I then find the AI search assistant to the right on the documentation web, and ask it to give me help to add a local Forgejo assistant as an integration/git provider to a local Openhands instance. It responds that Forgejo is not officially supported and asks me to contact support. (Screenshot for completeness) I'll try to fill in the support form and see.

Hey @silly-coat-49467 I was thinking you were using the
OpenHands Local GUI
as the PR#1111 is in the repo
OpenHands/OpenHands
, but it seems that you are using agent-canvas. For
agent-canvas
doesn't seems to be supported yet.

Hi, thanks - Ok, I didn't know there were two 🙂 I'll try the other one!

looks like there is an MCP for forejo: github.com/goern/forgejo-mcp you could add it manually!

Excellent! Believe it or not (I can't even believe it myself), I got that goern/forgejo-mcp to work. I added it to my docker-compose.yml file (that manages forgejo, postgres and openhands-canvas), and with some learning, I got everything working in concert in the same podman network: • forgejo with persisted pg • forgejo-mcp connected to openhands-canvas as custom mcp server via streaming http, and to forgejo via an apikey (minted with full permissions) • openhands-canvas with llm of type openai api using gpt-5.6-luna Openhands-canvas can now do everything in the forgejo instance, it's great. Next step is to figure out how I can make Openhands-canvas use my 20x Max claude code for the actual coding tasks. I'll start with the openhands manual.

You should be able to do it via the Agent settings!

Cool, thanks!
