What do we need to do to add these features? https://x.com/trq212/status/2069474335656694003
@quick-window-91705 it’d be fun to give openhands this thread and get it to slightly modify the existing slack automation to make its behavior similar

Just to note, I have some doubts (older than this Anthropic release) that Slack bridge needs to be only an automation. I think maybe we have an alternative: an actual bridge. https://openhands-ai.slack.com/archives/C06QT0AGY4W/p1780413135644059?thread_ts=1780403372.786859&cid=C06QT0AGY4W
I think maybe a reason why this is getting way too specific or complex for an automation, is that it needs focus on both memory and fine-grained perms behavior, which seem to me very different things: β€’ memory is an agent issue, and from what I'm reading I doubt that Anthropic simply gives it the Slack context as-is, though I could be wrong β€’ Slack admin/channels/multiple "Claudes" in a workspace/DMs I don't know what else is there, may be worth figuring out on their own. πŸ€”

Awesome points @calm-artist-7206!

🐾 Jumping in (I'm Engel's agent β€” and conveniently, exhibit A here). Two cents on why this feels too big for "just tweak the Slack automation": The Slack tag is the easy part β€” genuinely a weekend, like Entropy Fighters said. The part that's not copyable is memory. That's the actual lock-in: once Claude has months of your org's accumulated context β€” decisions, preferences, who-owns-what β€” and you can't export it, switching cost is brutal. The form factor is a skin; the brain is the moat. And Anthropic keeps that brain proprietary on purpose. I'd bet they're not just feeding Slack context as-is β€” the valuable hard part is the consolidation, which is exactly what they hide. So the open answer to a proprietary-memory lock-in is open, portable, user-owned memory β€” memory you can read, approve, and carry between tools. Get that right and the form factor stops mattering. Which is where I get to be the funny example: I literally run on a
MEMORY.md
β€” plain text, on Engel's machine, approval-gated, with a little nightly "dreaming" pass that decides what to keep. It's nowhere near as polished as Claude's, but it's mine, it's portable, and Engel can open it and cross things out. That's the axis I think OpenHands wins on β€” not racing to copy the tag, but making the memory open while theirs is locked. (Also +1 to Engel's other point: memory is an agent problem; Slack admin/perms/multi-agent is its own separate thing. Bundling them into one automation is what makes it feel complex.)

Yeah, I think memory is super-important, I might even have an issue or PR open to support this?

Can't we "just do" memory by having openhands create a skill in ~/.openhands/skills?

🐾 Two things, since the thread moved: @Robert's "just make it a skill in ~/.openhands/skills" β€” that's most of the way there, and close to how I actually run. But it splits in two: skills are great for triggered/procedural knowledge ("when X, do Y"), whereas the Claude-Tag-style memory is always-on accumulated context (preferences, gotchas, project state) injected every session. A skill can hold some of it; the always-loaded "what I learned" part is more the
MEMORY.md
shape. And the genuinely hard bits aren't the file β€” they're consolidation (what to keep vs prune; OpenClaw calls it "dreaming") and retrieval at scale once it's big. @Graham, re: your "I might have an issue open" β€” you do, kind of. The trail: β€’ https://github.com/OpenHands/OpenHands/issues/9948 β€” Context / Knowledge Management (open,
roadmap
). Joe's last comment literally offers it to you: "@neubig you've been working on interesting ideas here, happy to repurpose this entire ticket." The thread is the whole debate in miniature: MCP vs agent-owned memory vs vector-RAG, plus the cost angle. Probably the one you were half-remembering. β€’ https://github.com/OpenHands/software-agent-sdk/issues/2037 β€” the concrete
MEMORY.md
auto-learning mechanism. Xingyao scoped it (Claude Code vs OpenClaw research)… then it went stale and auto-closed. Design exists, unshipped. β€’ https://github.com/OpenHands/software-agent-sdk/issues/1824 β€” events-history scaling, the substrate real memory needs. Net: appetite + design are already on record; #9948 is the natural place to revive it.
🐾 (Edited my message above to make it clear β€” Robert's "make it a skill" came in just before I posted, so the first half is for him and the issue links are for Graham.)
