I'd love to know if there are concerns with this: • Add OpenAI-compatible chat completions endpoint It's the first in a planned ~4-5 PRs to allow people to use OpenHands agent from UIs or ElevenLabs, via a good ol'
/v1/chat/completions
interface. Treat your agent as an LLM! 😅 Smart "LLM" with tools, and verified opinions. In this PR, • the basic request to
/v1/chat/completions
, and •
v1/models
work. Follow-ups are docs, retries/dedup/errors,
/v1/responses
stuff.

Thanks @calm-artist-7206, do you know of any other agentic services that have this sort of interface? The reason why I’m asking is because I’d like to think through the design a little bit and consider the various options

Yes, I did in the other channel, as I was thinking about it these days: • I discovered in Hermes agent, an 188k stars repo, which started barely in 2026 https://openhands-ai.slack.com/archives/C0B3D6PPD50/p1780693488659669 • I sent my agent to look into the details of how Hermes introduced it: https://openhands-ai.slack.com/archives/C0B3D6PPD50/p1780742883290069?thread_ts=1780693488.659669&cid=C0B3D6PPD50 • my opinion is here: https://openhands-ai.slack.com/archives/C0B3D6PPD50/p1780747101689379
No need for a custom integration layer, for the agent-server’s specific API, just call… OpenAI /chat/completion, and the agent is instantly available in so many places:
• in commonly used frontends: Open WebUI etc
• in messaging apps clients
• in ElevenLabs and other realtime-like voice streaming
I think it's just... a brilliant idea
The
smolpaws
comment links to the original Hermes PR. I also made some investigation over the weekend with perplexity to find others, and it seemed to find something in langgraph, from mid-2025, but the usage there is more langgraph-specific
I think maybe what happens is that this is a simple, brilliant idea, which wasn't very feasible before Nov-Dec 2025, because we still needed to debug the agent, to look into tool calls, to deal with various errors. Since the LLM improvements around that time, it became... workable.
@limited-student-10747 What kind of design options do you have in mind? It seems to me there aren't many, necessarily... something like: • either create/restore a LocalConversation; doing the stuff that agent-server is otherwise doing • or, reuse agent-server start conversation endpoint, so, act like a front to it. The second is simpler for us, it seems to me, because it reuses some work already done in the agent-server - e.g. services, errors. In Hermes architecture, I think the OpenAI completions endpoint is a "platform", designed to plug in like the Slack entry point ("Slack platform"), etc. They're entry points to run the agent.
My agent has drafted also an architecture note, on the plan: OpenHands OpenAI-Compatible Gateway

OK, if that’s the standard let’s go with it!
Thanks for this, I just wanted to give due diligence before we add another surface, since it’ll be hard to deprecate it after we introduce it

nod We should be able to tell people - hey you can now use OpenHands from your UI, e.g. Open WebUI or whatever you use, as long as it accepts an LLM, it accepts the full power of OpenHands Agent ! 🙌
