it is a bit annoying that our current sub-agent delegation mechanism is synchronous rather than async, do we have plan to bring it back to async again at somepoint? 👀

eg after dispatching the agent, agent becomes idle. when sub-agent finishes, a callback will send the result of that delegation to the main session

I believe subagents were never async. Or?
I think that you would like to have subagents running in background. We have an issue for that: feat(delegate): Non-blocking background subagent execution To speed things up, you could increase the number of parallel tool calls you can make. This way, you can dispatch multiple subagents in parallel. Actually, we could add a setting in agent-canvas where users can choose this number, so we can dogfood/stress parallel tool calls in prod (with the default set to what it is now, i.e., 1).

Is there a reason why subagents wouldn't be async, by default when running via agent-server?

i think our earlier version of sub-agent delegation tool is actually async? You can dispatch a task, and the main agent can do their stuff, and then check the status of sub agents later? 👀

Ah ok… in V0?
c
ahh i must have remembered it wrong, it was the
delegate
tool, i thought we implemented the async version but apprantly we haven't https://github.com/OpenHands/software-agent-sdk/blob/main/openhands-tools/openhands/tools/delegate/definition.py
but looking at the definition here, it shouldn't hard to implement an async version since you can track each sub agents by "ids"
m
The Task tool it has already the structure to accomodate background agents. So it should not be a problem to implement.
