Thanks for the feedback so far! I'm open to implementing any solution (I already tried all 3 ways I mentioned) and wanted to see if there were any preferences.

TBH alternative 1 sounds to me like the root cause -ish, preserving the existing behavior for the rest; if it’s the only bugged caller, it seems simpler
