🙌*COMMUNITY FEEDBACK REQUESTED*🙌 SEE SURVEY POLL BELOW POST👇👇👇 HOW MUCH GUI IN THE TUI? 🧐 Hi everyone, We’re looking for feedback from those of you who use the CLI most frequently. As the CLI continues to evolve, we’re exploring new design directions that would allow for richer in-terminal UI experiences. This could include features such as: • Clickable dropdown menus • Button-based modals • Click to expand/collapse details in the conversation thread • Side panels or drawers for viewing conversation threads • Other interactive interface components While these enhancements could improve usability and discoverability, we recognize that many CLI users prefer traditional keyboard-driven workflows and minimal UI abstraction. Our goal is to thoughtfully balance richer UI capabilities with full keyboard accessibility and fallback options for those who prefer a classic terminal experience. We’d love your input on how you use the CLI today and how you’d like it to evolve.

What I would love to know, is the effect of a richer experience on
openhands web
workflow. It does mean it would completely, 100%, reflect in the web view, is that correct?
b
It wouldn't necessarily mean there is a 1-to-1 match, especially considering some features may come out earlier in the CLI.
c
Sorry, just to make sure I understand correctly: I mean the
openhands web
command, which creates a web UI on the fly I don't mean the actual, different, web project

@quick-window-91705 can better weigh in.
q
If I'm understanding correctly, is the question whether using super rich UI in the TUI will improve our
openhands web
experience?
c
I think so; is it 100% by default, and/or always?
q
Yep any UI experiences in the TUI would 100% reflect in web view (that includes keyboard interactions too, but mouse interactions would feel more web native)

my 2 cents, I personally think the CLI already has too much GUI in it. When I'm using the CLI, I want to be able to spin up a conversation as quickly as possible and start getting a task done. If I have a longer task I'm working on, I'll spin up the GUI. Having to pick up a mouse or feel like I have to just to change settings or do a specific action would limit the CLI imo I don't know how much the GUI impacts the performance, but Ideally we'd get to a similar launch time as claude before doing any drastic changes

claude 1.12s user 0.36s system

@ambitious-baker-8365 time to input in the field likely wouldn't be impacted, only on first use do you have to auth etc. the TUI is really lightweight so wouldn't really impact performance beyond what it is already given the framework is already in use. it's just a matter of adding different interaction types, for instance, a dropdown for models, that lives nested under chat input, or in some cases adding a modal like shown above when navigating some kind of configuration.

👍 Nice, Well • I like the right panel task view, makes it very easy to watch what step the CLI is on • I like the
/
commands popup ◦ would love some completion here .e.g
/skill <tab-autocomplete>
• I think the main conversation view is fine as is - can't really think of anything I'd like to add to it • If you were to add a list of conversations in the UI - it would be nice to track per folder • One ask I get a lot is when you tell OpenHands "No" to a specific action, would be nice to explain/adjust your prompt telling it why/what to do, similar to claude cli What I def wouldn't want • App/Web/Terminal Panes

I agree with @ambitious-baker-8365 coming from arch Linux there is a bit to much fluff - maybe add a cut down version- give me a black screen with white writing any day

I can't be the only person that has a secret dream to take Mystic or Enigma BBS and port them to be the control panel and interface layer for somethign like OpenHands? I'm all about more GUI in the TUI, pretty sure that's teh name of my next band
