What is best practice to use openhands with windows --- asking for a friend ๐Ÿ™‚
c
We recommend WSL, for Windows
Also, your log shows CodeAct, please note that itโ€™s a very old version of the CLI then. I posted a link to the new CLI in your thread above, otherwise itโ€™s a very outdated version
f
thank you sir much appreciated ๐Ÿ™‚
currently on windows and having heaps of issues integrating in zed the editor - { "theme": "One Dark", "agent_servers": { "your_agent": { "type": "custom", "command": "path_to_executable", "args": [], "env": {} }, "OpenHands": { "type": "custom", "command": "wsl", "args": [ "bash", "-c", "export LLM_API_KEY='sk-or-v1-XXXXX' && export LLM_BASE_URL='https://openrouter.ai/api/v1' && export LLM_MODEL='openai/gpt-4o' && export LLM_CUSTOM_LLM_PROVIDER='openai' && ~/dev/openhands-v1/dist/openhands acp" ], "env": {} } } }
l
Yeah, we recommend WSL for now, but cc @elegant-branch-54423 to note the additional interest in running OpenHands on Windows native.

@limited-student-10747 and @calm-artist-7206 are we using this ticket to track Windows support? https://github.com/OpenHands/software-agent-sdk/issues/1210
l
Yeah, I guess thatโ€™s the best one. BTW Iโ€™m going to try to get a Windows machine to dogfood more
f
yer i am having so many issues with openhands on windows - trying to set up with zed to no avail
c
Please consider using WSL

And sorry, what happens if you try to Add Agent, on the top right, in the External Agents section?
f
ah it just says that it cant connect
i will post most screen shots
i moved to neovim which is working
is there any advantage to using zed
c
No, it's just a matter of personal preference ๐Ÿ˜…

f
legend
i will try and reproduce the error for completeness
what is the cleanest way to try and change and test this
btw i also have this open -
which i think looks pretty neat btw
c
A large part of the API key is visible in the screenshot with Zed, you may want to revoke that key and create another

Although it gives auth error strangely

f
bit strange hey
c
So I think with the CLI, you could type
/settings
to change llm settings
โœ… 1
f
let me try
does this change it globally
c
yes
โœ… 1
f
ah so if i change in the cli
it will create a global configuration (?)
under wsl
c
it's a settings file,
~/.openhands/agent_settings.json
, so in your home directory in WSL
f
ah rodger that
let me try
another qq how do i get openhands to focus on a single folder for it generation under the cli

hey Andrew, start it at the top of the message. a thing I do often: cd my_repo run openhands tell openhands "okay we want to work on my_repo/my_dir, we want to accomplish X, Y, Z please check W for reference. Do not commit changes"

f
another qq - if i want to use open hands as a quasi chat - is there a best practice to do this
@millions-crayon-32880 - do you check the changes before you commit - Do not commit changes" - is this your workflow??
@calm-artist-7206 can you assign a dev folder in the config so it stays focused
c

Just talk to the agent! โค๏ธ I do too, I have a pinned tab in the terminal where I just talk to OpenHands agent - it's like talk to the computer to ask it things
can you assign a dev folder in the config so it stays focused
Do you mean like this? https://github.com/OpenHands/software-agent-sdk/issues/240

@future-architect-14294 depends on the change I'm asking OpenHands to do. When I want to be careful of which files will be changed (like the case you are asking) I like to double check with git diff. Other times, I prefer to ask it to commit and push often so I can review commits independently.
