GPT 5.2 notices in passing some useless getattr that its older sibling always did

What's your impression of 5.2 so far?
I don't think I'm going to use it. It just burned through an entire context reading code without writing any. Cost me $20 too. I'm going back to 5.1
Maybe it would make sense in more targeted situations.
c
Interesting, thanks for the heads up. I wonder if such behavior... idk, sounds like the extreme version of what GPT-5 was usually doing, like investigate deeply first, then maybe one shoot. You were using it with OpenHands V0 ? High reasoning?
c
yeah, high reasoning. 0.60
c
...Prompt injection classifier gone wrong? 🫠 GPT-5.1-codex-max

I tried 5.2 again with a more targeted narrow task and it performed an unrequested
bulk cleanup of "untracked" files
. It deleted like 15 untracked shell scripts I had been using for convenience purposes. GPT 5.2 is seriously on my shit list. Strongly dislike.
c
Ouch, I had that happen with 5.0 or 5.0-codex ā˜ļø Sorry, I think that's not newly in 5.2, but more like a GPT-5.x habit...
Although... I take back the term "habit", I haven't looked closer into this but it seemed to have a desire to cleanup that got stuff more than once...
c
I've never had 5.1 do this, or 5.0. I did hear from my jiu jitsu training partner last night that 5.0-codex had these same behaviors though.
c
could you please tell, how were you running it though, I think 0.60 doesn't have a CLI, and the web UI spins up a docker container with a repo, so it shouldn't run on local machine? was it the current CLI?
c
No, I don't use the CLI. I just use advanced settings and pop
openai/gpt-5.2-2025-12-11
in there.
You folks who trust the AI to just raw dog your system on the CLI are metal. I'm not that brave.
c
Are you mounting a local directory in the docker workspace then? I'm just trying to understand how it had access to untracked files
c
correct. I use WORKSPACE_BASE or whatever.
c
OK, thank you. Yes, the CLI is totally local by default, and currently it doesn't even try to restrict the agent to the project directory. I completely understand nod
OK, for my part, I settled for: I love 5.2! This weekend I had a glimpse of the future, which is today or almost today. For context, I'm working with CLIs for OpenHands, codex-cli, and I keep trying to use Claude Code, Gemini-CLI, too (for comparison) and make them work together. I try an ā€œagent mailā€ MCP but I’m starting to think I don’t even need that, just tmux. • to GPT-5.2, all I needed was to tell it what we work with (another CLI for tracking issues) and that it has to request review… and it did it. It went through issue after issue, and it mostly didn’t forget… any of the rules. • Gemini-CLI was not usable, it hit rate limit too soon • I'm not a fan of Claude Code

Once I worked around some of its quirks, I've been getting useful work out of 5.2 as well. It's expensive though.
