Crosspost cause I see very few people in the RFC channel
Tagging @Evangelos Karatzas cause he is the AI expert here

Awww stop praising mee sillyyy 😊 Anyway :p Yes, up for it, writing it as descriptive as possible, with the least amount of tokens. Being universal for all nfcore pipelines, as entry point knowledge for agents
m
why not have all that in a plugin/skill? these things are still evolving changing too much as I would like to have it in the template yet.
e
Could start with something very little and very standard, like file structure and lint/test commands
m
these should all be in the contributing.md because also good for non-llm devs...
party this 5
e
Then an AGENTS.md that links to other.md files :D
Could save some tokens
m
Copy code
#AGENTS.md

READ CONTRIBUTING.md!!

my proposal for the agents.md file
e
It's an actual thing :p CLAUDE.md redirection to AGENTS.md for example, to not duplicate :p
I don't disagree! XD
Might actually make sense!
(some of the things here are already outdated, which I see as a reason why we should not add it to the template)
i
This PR looks rather stale. Although the AI industry is changing very quickly, it is still true that
AGENTS.md
is the closest there is to a standard.
CONTRIBUTING.md
is pretty close to a functional steering file, although it is optimized for a human contributor, so some sections might not work perfectly (e.g. the part on adding a new step doesn't feel exact enough, plus it references
nf-core pipelines schema build
, which is not agent-friendly as it is).
p
Split thread 😵 but I said something similar to @mashehu on the other thread
I'd prefer something evergreen, rather than in the repo (and permanently behind)
or perhaps a mixture of the two
i
It seems that agents deal pretty well with URLs (as long as you are online), so your idea of having a minimal
AGENTS.md
with a pointer to a live steering file might be the best option

Just to follow up on this (cause I see good reasons to do something in this area), do you think it's better to try to revive that RFC again, or to start a new one with a fresh perspective and more defined scope (minimal
AGENTS.md
with references to
CONTRIBUTING.md
and/or a live steering file)?
p
I think a new RFC with minimal scope is more likely to progress, to be honest.
m
but let's then close the other one, in that case

Can we get some more votes on the RFC? I feel like we are getting close to a consensus

Come on, we need 2 more votes
