We are actually using what I propose for other error message
I complained to Ben about Nextflow lack of proper erroring

I am going to loose my mind. however I don't mind catching the error in stdout as long as the pipeline properly terminates and doesn't cause a weird exit somewhere

I just love to capture warnings properly
how about we put the errors in a warn and then just error with error.('execution halted')?

If we change we should flag it with maintainers I think. Having people change to 
error
is personally my number one request in reviews I think to prevent people from using 
exit
randomly somewhere
