Has there been a recent change to livekit playground, earlier I was putting my wss url and token to connect to an agent, but now it takes me to agent console where I don't know how to configure, also while running the agent in dev mode in local I am not able to see the speaker or agent transcripts that I used to get

Thanks for reaching out, Suman. I'm an AI assistant and I'm here to help. Give me a moment while I research this topic.
Thanks — I hear you: the Playground no longer accepts a raw wss+token flow and now opens the Agent Console, and your local dev agent no longer shows speaker/agent transcripts. I can help troubleshoot both. Quick facts and why this changed • The browser-based Agent Console replaced the older Sandbox/Playground flow and is now the primary testing/debug UI. It provides a unified view (audio, events, transcripts, metrics) instead of a simple wss+token connect flow. (If you preferred the old direct connect, that direct Playground flow is no longer the primary path.) What to check so your local dev agent shows transcripts 1. Agent SDK version ◦ Ensure your agent uses Agents SDK >= 1.5.2 (Python) or >= 1.2.4 (Node) — Agent Console features require recent SDK versions. 1. Agent run mode ◦ For local dev use
dev
mode (example commands:
uv run agent.py dev
for Python or
tsx agent.ts dev
for Node) so the agent registers as a worker visible to the Console. 1. Agent Console config ◦ Open the Agent Console in the Cloud dashboard, set the Agent name in the config panel, then click Save and start session to begin a session that shows real-time transcripts and audio. 1. Transcription stream subscription ◦ The frontend needs to subscribe to the
lk.transcription
text stream. Transcriptions are published on that topic by default when
text_output=True
. 1. AgentSession / output options ◦ Confirm your agent uses
AgentSession
with text outputs enabled (default). In Python this is `text_output=True`; in Node check
outputOptions
. If disabled, transcripts won’t be emitted. 1. Environment & auth ◦ When running locally, ensure
LIVEKIT_API_KEY
/
LIVEKIT_API_SECRET
and any project IDs match the Console/project you’re opening to avoid authentication/registration mismatch. If transcripts still don’t appear • Verify the agent console shows the agent as “registered worker” in your agent logs. • Check the Console’s Events view for
conversation_item_added
or
lk.transcription
events (these indicate transcriptions are being emitted). • If you’re running the agent in terminal-only console mode, use
uv run agent.py console
for local text/audio debugging without the web Console. If you want, tell me: • Which SDK (Python or Node) and SDK version you’re using, • The exact command you run to start the agent, • Whether the Agent Console shows the agent as registered. With those I’ll give targeted next steps. I am currently in this "version": "1.4.6" and using this command to run in local PYTHONPATH=src python3 -m app.livekit.agent dev
t
Thanks — I see you’re on Agents SDK v1.4.6 and running with
PYTHONPATH=src python3 -m app.livekit.agent dev
. That version is older than the Agent Console requirements, which explains why the Console flow changed behavior and why transcripts may be missing. What to do next 1. Upgrade the Agents SDK to at least 1.5.2 for Python. This unlocks full Agent Console integration and real-time debugging features. 2. After upgrading, start your agent in dev mode the same way (your command is fine). Confirm the agent logs show registered worker. 3. Open the Agent Console in the Cloud dashboard, set the Agent name in the config panel, then click Save and start session. 4. If transcripts still don’t appear: ◦ Ensure your agent uses
AgentSession
with
text_output=True
. ◦ Verify the frontend/console is subscribed to the
lk.transcription
stream. ◦ Check Console → Events for
conversation_item_added
/
lk.transcription
. ◦ Confirm
LIVEKIT_API_KEY
/
LIVEKIT_API_SECRET
and project ID match the Console. If you want, I can: • Provide the exact pip command to upgrade your SDK. • Walk through checking
text_output
in your code (share the small snippet that creates the AgentSession). • Help inspect the agent log output if you paste the relevant lines showing registration or errors. Which option would you like me to do first? , with interactive elements

Provide the exact pip command to upgrade your SDK
t
Thanks — since you’re on Python Agents SDK v1.4.6, run this to upgrade to the required version (1.5.2): pip install --upgrade livekit-agents==1.5.2 To verify the upgrade, run: python -c "import livekit_agents; print(livekit_agents.version)" If you prefer the latest patch after 1.5.2, use: pip install --upgrade 'livekit-agents>=1.5.2' , with interactive elements

This all will get automatically upgraded right> livekit 1.1.2 livekit-agents 1.4.6 livekit-api 1.1.0 livekit-blingfire 1.1.0 livekit-plugins-aws 1.4.6 livekit-plugins-cartesia 1.4.6 livekit-plugins-deepgram 1.4.6 livekit-plugins-google 1.4.6 livekit-plugins-noise-cancellation 0.2.5 livekit-plugins-sarvam 1.4.6 livekit-plugins-silero 1.4.6 livekit-plugins-turn-detector 1.4.6 livekit-protocol 1.1.2
t
Good question — pip will only upgrade the package(s) you tell it to. Running pip install --upgrade livekit-agents==1.5.2 will upgrade only
livekit-agents
. It will not automatically upgrade the other LiveKit packages in your list. If you want to upgrade multiple LiveKit packages together, run: pip install --upgrade \ livekit-agents==1.5.2 \ livekit==1.1.2 \ livekit-api==1.1.0 \ livekit-protocol==1.1.2 (Adjust versions as needed; you can use
>=1.5.2
for
livekit-agents
if you want the latest compatible patch.) After upgrading: • Verify versions: python -c "import pkg_resources; print({p.project_name: p.version for p in pkg_resources.working_set if p.project_name.startswith('livekit')})" • Restart your agent and confirm the logs show “registered worker”. If you’d like, I can recommend a safe set of versions to upgrade together based on your current list. Which approach do you prefer: upgrade only
livekit-agents
, or upgrade multiple packages now? , with interactive elements
