04/17/2026, 4:59 AMgenerate_reply() for your two cases.
• Case 1 — Agent already has the tool:
◦ You don’t need to pass the tool to generate_reply(). If the tool is in the agent’s tool list, the LLM can call it automatically during the ReAct reasoning loop when appropriate. Just call generate_reply() (or generateReply) with your instructions/user input and the agent will invoke any available tool it decides to use.
• Case 2 — Agent does not have the tool:
◦ You cannot pass a one-off tool into generate_reply(). First add the tool to the agent’s tool list (for example, with agent.update_tools(...) or agent.updateTools(...)). After the tool is added, subsequent generate_reply() calls can use that tool. There is no built-in way to temporarily provide a tool for a single generate_reply() call.
If you want, tell me which SDK (Python or TypeScript) you’re using and the tool definition you have, and I’ll give the exact code snippet to add the tool and call generate_reply().
