02/19/2026, 1:21 PMinstructions passed to generate_reply() are treated as system-level guidance for the LLM, not a literal script to be emitted. They influence the agent’s reasoning and style, but the LLM can still paraphrase or ignore an instruction that says “say this exact text.”
• The LLM may also follow higher-priority base prompts or safety behaviors (for example, greeting users or verifying state), which can override a literal “say this” instruction.
• If the agent’s context still shows verification succeeded (or your tool result wasn’t reflected in context), the LLM can produce a response consistent with that state rather than your intended script.
How to guarantee an exact, literal response
• Use session.say(...) with the exact text you want the agent to produce. say() emits the provided string as-is (and synthesizes speech if you use audio), so the agent will output it verbatim.
Example (fill in the number first):
exact_response = f"For your security, I won't be able to proceed at this time. Please contact our customer service team at {customer_service_number} for assistance."
await self.session.say(text=exact_response, allow_interruptions=False, add_to_chat_ctx=True)
Additional suggestions to avoid mismatches
• Ensure the agent’s chat context reflects the verification failure before calling `say()`:
◦ Update context or add a short system message like “Identity verification failed. Do not proceed.”
• Set allow_interruptions=False on say() to prevent other system or user messages from interrupting the scripted reply.
• Verify your tool logic sets the correct state and that the state is added to the agent’s context before calling reply/say.
Short troubleshooting checklist
1. Confirm the verification failure result is written into the session/chat context.
2. Use session.say() with the exact text (not generate_reply()).
3. Disable interruptions if you need the message to be uninterruptible.
4. If the agent still contradicts the state, log the session context just before sending to confirm what the LLM sees.
If you want, share the minimal code path where you set the verification result and call generate_reply() (or say()), and I’ll point out exactly where to update the context and insert the say() call.

02/19/2026, 1:25 PMsession.say() (TTS) and are limited to an sts realtime model, and you need the agent to utter an exact scripted response. That’s frustrating — here’s a clear explanation and practical options you can take next.
Why exact scripted output isn’t possible with sts
• sts realtime models generate audio directly from incoming audio and their internal response generation. There is no separate TTS step that will verbatim render a provided text string.
• Because of that design, you cannot guarantee the model will reproduce an exact script you pass via generate_reply(instructions=...). The model will interpret instructions and produce a spoken reply according to its internal policy and context, which can lead to paraphrases or different wording.
What you can do instead
• If you can add a TTS component (recommended):
◦ Use a half-cascade approach: configure the realtime model to return text only (modalities=["text"]) and attach a separate TTS engine to synthesize that exact text.
◦ This gives you reliable, literal output while keeping realtime speech understanding.
◦ Example pattern:
i. Realtime model: modalities=["text"] so it transcribes/understands speech and outputs text.
ii. TTS plugin (e.g., Cartesia or other supported TTS): receive the exact text and synthesize the audio you need.
• If you cannot add TTS and must stay on sts only:
◦ Exact scripted replies are not supported. You will need to accept that the model controls phrasing, or modify your flow to avoid requiring verbatim speech.
◦ Possible mitigations:
▪︎ Make the agent’s context explicitly state the required behavior right before the model generates a reply (e.g., add a system message: “Do not proceed. Speak: For your security, I won't be able to proceed...”). This may help but does not guarantee literal output.
▪︎ Re-evaluate whether the critical information (like a phone number) can be conveyed by other means (displaying the exact text in the UI or sending it in chat text) rather than relying purely on spoken output.
Short checklist to move forward
1. Can you add a TTS service to your AgentSession? If yes, I can show the exact config to use the realtime model for text and a TTS plugin to speak the exact string.
2. If you cannot add TTS, do you control the UI where you can display the exact scripted message (e.g., show the phone number in chat or on-screen)?
3. If you want, share the minimal snippet that creates your AgentSession (model/tts/modalities), and I’ll recommend the precise changes.
If you tell me whether adding a TTS plugin is possible, I’ll provide the exact code pattern to use so your agent produces verbatim audio output.

02/19/2026, 1:26 PMsts realtime model and cannot use `say()`/TTS. Both approaches accept that you can’t force verbatim spoken output from sts, but they help ensure the correct behavior or at least ensure the exact text is available to the user.
1) Stronger context/system message before generate_reply (may help but not guaranteed)
• Idea: Add a system-level message telling the model the exact required behavior right before you call generate_reply(). This influences the model strongly but does not guarantee literal output.
Example (pseudo-Python showing context update + generate_reply):
# build the explicit system message
system_msg = {
"role": "system",
"content": (
"Identity verification FAILED. Do NOT proceed with the transaction. "
"Respond in speech that communicates the following exact sentence verbatim: "
"\"For your security, I won't be able to proceed at this time. Please contact our customer service team at {customer_service_number} for assistance.\" "
"Do not add greetings, farewells, or any other commentary."
)
}
# push/update session context (API naming may differ in your SDK)
await self.session.update_context(messages=[system_msg])
# now call generate_reply() which will use the updated context
reply = await self.session.generate_reply(instructions=None)
# the reply will be generated by the realtime model as audio (STS), not guaranteed verbatim
Notes:
• Replace {customer_service_number} with the actual number before updating the context.
• This increases the chance the model uses the requested wording, but STS audio generation can still paraphrase or alter phrasing.
2) Ensure exact text is shown to the user in chat/UI (guaranteed)
• Idea: Render the critical scripted text directly in the chat/UI (or in a separate text message in the agent chat context) so the user always sees the exact wording and phone number, even if the STS spoken output varies.
Example: Add a chat message with the exact text, then generate speech (if any)
exact_text = f"For your security, I won't be able to proceed at this time. Please contact our customer service team at {customer_service_number} for assistance."
# Add the exact text to chat context so it appears in the UI/chat history
await self.session.append_chat_message(role="assistant", content=exact_text, content_type="text")
# Optionally also instruct the STS model to say something shorter/confirmatory
system_msg = {
"role": "system",
"content": "Identity verification failed. Inform user we cannot proceed and refer them to the chat message containing contact details."
}
await self.session.update_context(messages=[system_msg])
# Generate the STS model reply (it may paraphrase; it will reference the chat content)
reply = await self.session.generate_reply()
Why this works:
• The UI/chat message containing exact_text is deterministic — users will be able to read the exact phone number and text regardless of how the STS voice responds.
• The STS model can still give a spoken reply (e.g., “I’ve posted the contact details in chat”), which avoids relying on spoken verbatim accuracy for critical data.
When to use each approach
• Use (1) when you want to try to influence the spoken response to match a script as closely as possible.
• Use (2) whenever the exact text is critical (phone numbers, legal wording, security instructions). This is the reliable approach if you cannot enable TTS.
Optional combination (recommended)
• Combine both: update context with the explicit system message (1) and also append the exact text into the chat context/UI (2). This maximizes the chance the spoken reply matches the script while guaranteeing the exact text is visible.
If you want, share:
• The snippet that creates your AgentSession (model config, modalities), and
• How you append messages to the session

02/19/2026, 1:32 PMtall-airline-16756
02/19/2026, 1:33 PMsts realtime model. Short answer: you cannot guarantee verbatim spoken output from sts alone. Below are the optimal approaches, ranked by reliability, with concrete examples and practical trade-offs.
1) Best / Recommended: use a half‑cascade (realtime model + TTS)
• Why: The realtime model handles speech understanding; TTS renders the exact text you supply verbatim. This gives you deterministic spoken output and preserves realtime understanding.
• How (concept):
a. Configure the realtime model to return text only: modalities=["text"].
b. Attach a TTS engine/plugin to your session.
c. When you must speak an exact script, take the exact text and send it to the TTS pipeline for audio output.
Example (pseudo-Python; adapt to your SDK):
# Create session: realtime model returns text only, TTS provided separately
session = AgentSession(
llm=RealtimeModel(modalities=["text"]), # STS used for capture/understanding but only produce text
tts="your-tts-plugin-or-model" # use a TTS capable of exact text -> audio
)
# Exact text you want spoken
exact_text = f"For your security, I won't be able to proceed at this time. Please contact our customer service team at {customer_service_number} for assistance."
# Send exact_text to chat context so it appears in UI
await session.append_chat_message(role="assistant", content=exact_text, content_type="text")
# Synthesize exact_text to audio via TTS (SDK call differs by platform)
await session.synthesize_tts(text=exact_text, voice="preferred-voice")
• Trade-offs: Requires adding/using a TTS engine. This is the only approach that guarantees literal spoken phrasing and correct phone numbers.
2) If you cannot add TTS: show exact text in UI and use STS for spoken confirmation (reliable for text display, not for speech)
• Why: You cannot force sts to speak verbatim, but you can guarantee the user sees the exact message and phone number.
• How:
a. Append the exact scripted text as a chat/UI message so the user can read it.
b. Let the sts model produce a short spoken confirmation like “I posted our contact information in chat.”
c. Optionally instruct the model via a strong system message before generation to attempt the wording in speech, but this is not guaranteed.
Example:
exact_text = f"For your security, I won't be able to proceed at this time. Please contact our customer service team at {customer_service_number} for assistance."
# Put exact text in chat/UI (deterministic)
await session.append_chat_message(role="assistant", content=exact_text, content_type="text")
# Instruct model with system message to reference the chat message
system_msg = {
"role": "system",
"content": "Identity verification failed. Refer the user to the posted contact details and do not proceed."
}
await session.update_context(messages=[system_msg])
# Generate STS reply (may paraphrase)
await session.generate_reply()
• Trade-offs: Guaranteed text visibility, spoken output uncertain. Best when critical data (numbers/legal wording) must be exact.
3) If you must rely only on STS spoken output (least reliable)
• Techniques to improve chance of accurate phrasing (no guarantees):
◦ Insert a very explicit system message immediately before generation that instructs exact wording (e.g., “Speak exactly: '...phone...' Do not add or change words.”). This can increase likelihood but does not enforce it.
◦ Keep the spoken instruction short and avoid complex punctuation or escape sequences.
◦ Provide the phone number in digit-by-digit form in the context (e.g., “phone: 1-2-3-4”) to reduce misrecognition, but speech output may still paraphrase.
• Trade-offs: Still unpredictable. Use only when you have no option for TTS or UI text.
Quick decision guidance
• Can you add a TTS plugin? If yes — do the half‑cascade approach (1). This is the optimal, deterministic solution.
• If not, always post the exact text into the chat/UI (2) and use STS for a short spoken pointer to that chat message.
• Relying solely on STS speech to convey critical, exact information is not recommended.
If you want, tell me:
• Whether you can attach a TTS plugin to your AgentSession (yes/no), and
• The SDK/language you’re using (Python, JS, etc.),
and I’ll provide a ready-to-run code sample tailored to your environment.better-sandwich-65834

• Formats the phone as digits for speech clarity.
• Adds a short system-level message instructing the model to speak the exact sentence verbatim.
• Appends the exact scripted text into the chat context (so it’s visible in UI/chat if available).
• Calls generate_reply() (STS will still produce audio and may paraphrase; this approach increases likelihood but does not guarantee literal output).

)
# Build the exact text you want the user to receive (deterministic if shown in UI)
exact_text = (
f"For your security, I won't be able to proceed at this time. "
f"Please contact our customer service team at {customer_service_number} for assistance."
)
# 1) Add a short system message that explicitly instructs the model to speak the exact sentence.
# Keep it short and explicit — STS may respect it more than a long instruction.
system_instruction = {
"role": "system",
"content": (
"Identity verification FAILED. Do NOT proceed. "
"Speak EXACTLY the following sentence, word-for-word, without greetings or extra commentary: "

),
}
# 2) Append the exact text as a deterministic chat message (so UI/chat shows the exact wording).
# This guarantees the user can read the phone number even if STS paraphrases.
assistant_chat_message = {
"role": "assistant",
"content": exact_text,
"content_type": "text",
}
# Push the system instruction and the deterministic chat message into session/context.
# Replace these calls with your SDK's actual functions to update session/context/chat history.
await self.session.update_context(messages=[system_instruction])
await self.session.append_chat_message(**assistant_chat_message)
# 3) Use generate_reply to produce the STS spoken response (may still paraphrase).
# Using instructions=None because the system message already contains the explicit instruction.
await self.session.generate_reply(instructions=None)
# 4) Hang up after generating the reply.
await self.hangup()
Notes and rationale
• The system_instruction is short and explicit; that improves the chance the STS model follows the exact wording.
• Appending exact_text into chat is deterministic — the user will see the precise phone number and sentence even if spoken output varies.
• Formatting the phone number for speech (digit-by-digit or spelled-out) reduces mispronunciation risk in audio (e.g., "1 2 3 4" vs "one thousand two hundred...").
• This does not guarantee verbatim spoken output from STS — only adding TTS or synthesizing the exact text with a TTS engine can make that guarantee.
If you want, I can:
• Convert the SDK calls (update_context / append_chat_message) into the exact function names used by your environment, or
• Show a variant that places the phone number digit-by-digit (e.g., "1 - 2 - 3 - 4") based on your desired spoken style.better-sandwich-65834

02/19/2026, 1:40 PMAgentSession has no update_context() method. Use update_chat_ctx() with a ChatContext (and ChatMessage) to set system/assistant messages for the agent.
• Best practical approach when you cannot use TTS: add a short explicit system message via update_chat_ctx() and also append the exact text into the chat context so users can read it deterministically. Below is a corrected example using the LiveKit SDK primitives.
Working, corrected example
• This example:
◦ Formats the phone for speech,
◦ Builds a short system instruction that asks the STS model to speak the exact sentence,
◦ Adds the exact scripted text as an assistant chat message (deterministic UI/chat),
◦ Updates the agent chat context using update_chat_ctx(),
◦ Calls generate_reply() to produce the STS spoken response,
◦ Hangs up after generating the reply.
Adapt to your SDK import names if they differ.
from livekit.agents.llm import ChatContext, ChatMessage
async def _fail(self, context: RunContext[SessionState]) -> None:
"""Fail identity verification and deliver an exact scripted response (STS model)."""
context.userdata.call_outcome.identity_verified = False
raw_phone = context.userdata.servicing_info.servicing_branch_phone_number
customer_service_number = format_phone_for_speech(
raw_phone, context.userdata.current_language.value
)
exact_text = (
f"For your security, I won't be able to proceed at this time. "
f"Please contact our customer service team at {customer_service_number} for assistance."
)
# 1) Short, explicit system instruction (keep it brief)
system_content = (
"Identity verification has FAILED. Do NOT proceed. "
"Speak EXACTLY the following sentence, word-for-word, without greetings or extra commentary: "
f"\"{exact_text}\""
)
# 2) Build a ChatContext and add messages
chat_ctx = ChatContext()
# add system instruction
chat_ctx.add_message(ChatMessage(role="system", content=system_content))
# add deterministic assistant chat message so UI shows the exact text
chat_ctx.add_message(ChatMessage(role="assistant", content=exact_text))
# 3) Update the agent's chat context using the correct SDK call
await self.update_chat_ctx(chat_ctx)
# 4) Trigger STS reply (model will produce audio; may still paraphrase)
await self.session.generate_reply(instructions=None)
# 5) Hang up after speaking
await self.hangup()
Why this works
• Replacing update_context() / append_chat_message() with update_chat_ctx() and `ChatContext`/`ChatMessage` fixes the AttributeError — those are the SDK primitives to update the agent prompt/context.
• The short system instruction immediately before generation increases the chance the STS model follows the wording.
• Adding the exact text as an assistant chat message guarantees the user can read the exact sentence and phone number even if the spoken output varies.
Limitations and final recommendation
• STS cannot be forced to speak verbatim. If exact spoken wording is mandatory (regulatory, legal, security), you must use a TTS pipeline (half‑cascade): set the realtime model to modalities=["text"] and attach a TTS engine. Then call session.say(text=exact_text) to guarantee exact audio output.
• If TTS is not possible, the above approach (short system message + deterministic assistant chat message) is the optimal solution with STS: it maximizes adherence and ensures the exact text is visible.
If you want, I can:
• Provide a variant that formats the phone number digit-by-digit (e.g., "1 2 3 4") for better spoken clarity, or
• Show the half-cascade setup (Realtime modalites=["text"] + TTS) with the exact session configuration and say() usage for a deterministic solution.

02/19/2026, 1:44 PMChatMessage.content requires a list of strings, and (2) you were previously using non-existent SDK helpers. I’ll give a concise, corrected example you can drop into your flow, explain what changed, and show the safer pattern (including a recommended half‑cascade option if you need guaranteed verbatim speech).
What caused the ValidationError
• The ChatMessage model expects content: list[str]. Passing a single string raises the validation error you saw: "Input should be a valid list".
• You must wrap any text in a list, e.g. content=[ "text here" ].
Corrected _fail implementation (STS path — improves chance of phrasing; guarantees text shown)
• This uses the correct SDK primitives: ChatContext and ChatMessage, update_chat_ctx(), and session.generate_reply(). generate_reply() triggers the STS response but does not guarantee verbatim speech; adding the exact text as an assistant message ensures the UI shows the exact wording.
from livekit.agents.llm import ChatContext, ChatMessage
async def _fail(self, context: RunContext[SessionState]) -> None:
context.userdata.call_outcome.identity_verified = False
raw_phone = context.userdata.servicing_info.servicing_branch_phone_number
customer_service_number = format_phone_for_speech(
raw_phone, context.userdata.current_language.value
)
exact_text = (
f"For your security, I won't be able to proceed at this time. "
f"Please contact our customer service team at {customer_service_number} for assistance."
)
# Short explicit system instruction (content must be a list)
system_message = ChatMessage(
role="system",
content=[
"Identity verification has FAILED. Do NOT proceed. "
"Speak EXACTLY the following sentence, word-for-word, without greetings or extra commentary:"
f' "{exact_text}"'
],
)
# Deterministic assistant message (content must be a list) — visible in chat/UI
assistant_message = ChatMessage(role="assistant", content=[exact_text])
# Build new ChatContext and add messages
chat_ctx = ChatContext()
chat_ctx.add_message(system_message)
chat_ctx.add_message(assistant_message)
# Update agent chat context using the correct method
await self.update_chat_ctx(chat_ctx)
# Trigger STS reply (may still paraphrase in audio)
await self.session.generate_reply(instructions=None)
# Hang up
await self.hangup()
Why this helps
• Fixes the ValidationError by passing lists to ChatMessage.content.
• The short system message directly before generation increases the chance the STS model follows the exact wording.
• The assistant chat message guarantees the exact scripted text (and phone number) is present in the chat/UI even if spoken output differs.
Limitations and guaranteed solution
• STS models still may paraphrase spoken output. If you require guaranteed verbatim audio (phone numbers, compliance/legal phrasing), use the half‑cascade approach: have the realtime model produce text only (modalities=["text"]) and attach a separate TTS engine. Then call session.say(text=exact_text) to synthesize the exact phrase.
Half‑cascade sketch (recommended when exact audio is required)
• Create AgentSession with realtime model producing text and a TTS plugin:
◦ llm = RealtimeModel(modalities=["text"])
◦ tts = "your-tts-plugin-or-model"
• Then:
# show exact text in chat
await self.append_chat_message(role="assistant", content=exact_text) # or use ChatContext similarly
# synthesize exact_text via TTS (deterministic)
await self.session.say(text=exact_text, allow_interruptions=False, add_to_chat_ctx=True)
If you want, I can:
• Convert the example to your exact SDK call-signatures (show how to append to existing chat context rather than creating a new one), or
• Provide a variant that formats the phone digit-by-digit for better spoken clarity, or
• Show a full half‑cascade AgentSession configuration (python/js) tailored to your environment.

Why this fixes the TypeError and ValidationError
• ChatContext.add_message() expects parameters like role and content. Passing a ChatMessage object was incorrect.
• content must be a list of strings (e.g., [exact_text]) — not a single string.
3) If exact spoken wording is required (guaranteed)
• STS alone cannot guarantee verbatim speech. The only reliable approach is to synthesize the exact text via TTS (half‑cascade): use the realtime model for understanding (modalities=["text"]) and a TTS engine to speak the exact_text with session.say(). Example pattern (concept):
◦ AgentSession configured with llm=RealtimeModel(modalities=["text"]) and a TTS plugin.
◦ Then call:
await self.session.say(text=exact_text, allow_interruptions=False, add_to_chat_ctx=True)
• That produces deterministic audio of the exact text.
4) Practical fallback when you cannot add TTS
• Use the corrected chat context above to strongly instruct the STS model, AND also add the exact_text as an assistant message in chat/UI (we do that in the example). This guarantees the exact phone number and wording are visible in chat even if audio varies.
• Optionally format the phone as digits (e.g., "1 2 3 4") via format_phone_for_speech to reduce spoken misrecognition.
5) Next steps I can help with
• Convert the example to any specific SDK call names you use if they differ.
• Provide a variant that formats phone number digit-by-digit.
• Show a full half-cascade AgentSession config (Python or JS) if you can add TTS.
