12/16/2025, 6:37 AMgenerate_reply() automatically after every user turn completes. I can help—below are concise options and a quick checklist. Which platform are you using (Python or Node.js)?
If you're using Python
1. Override the lifecycle hook on_user_turn_completed.
2. Call await self.session.generate_reply() inside that method.
Example:
from livekit.agents import Agent, ChatContext
class MyAgent(Agent):
async def on_user_turn_completed(self, turn_ctx: ChatContext, new_message):
await self.session.generate_reply()
If you're using Node.js/TypeScript
1. Override onUserTurnCompleted.
2. Call this.session.generateReply() inside it.
Example:
import { voice } from '@livekit/agents';
class MyAgent extends voice.Agent {
async onUserTurnCompleted(turnCtx, newMessage) {
this.session.generateReply();
}
}
Quick checklist and tips
• If you need to customize responses, pass instructions or context before calling generate_reply() / generateReply().
• This hook runs when user audio/input ends; use it to guarantee a reply after each user turn.
• If you want different behavior for certain turns (silence, short utterances, interruptions), tell me the rules and I’ll show conditional examples.
Which language/runtime are you using and do you need examples showing custom instructions or conditional logic?

12/16/2025, 6:39 AMgenerate_reply() from on_user_turn_completed will not by itself cause two responses, unless something else also triggers reply generation.
Why:
• The lifecycle hook runs after the user turn ends; calling generate_reply() there produces one reply.
• Duplicate replies happen only if another part of your code (another hook, an event listener, or autosend behavior) also calls generate_reply() / generateReply() for the same turn.
How to avoid duplicates:
• Ensure only one place calls reply generation for a given turn (commonly the on_user_turn_completed hook).
• If you have other hooks (e.g., on_message_received, timers, or external events), add a guard/flag or check `turn_ctx`/message IDs to skip additional calls.
• For conditional replies, wrap the call:
if not turn_ctx.reply_already_sent:
await self.session.generate_reply()
(or similar logic in Node.js)
If you share which other hooks/events you use, I can suggest a concrete guard implementation.
