You're asking whether a LiveKit token is the same as a LiveKit key or secret — short answer: no.
•
LiveKit token: a short-lived JWT that a participant uses to authenticate when connecting to a room. It contains the participant identity, room/permission claims, and an expiry.
•
API key & API secret: long-lived project credentials. The
API key identifies your project and the
API secret is used server-side to sign/generate tokens. These must never be exposed to clients.
Workflow: your backend uses the API key + secret to create a signed token for a user. The client uses that token to join the room.
