which version of egress are you using? you should not be seeing any grey boxes in recent versions.

previous versions of the template had a bug where it's not switching the active speaker in view correctly. It was fixed a few months ago.

I have updated to the latest version, but the testing issue still persists. Could it be because only the host is streaming video and audio, while other participants are only streaming audio?

oh.. that's it then..

single-speaker

will switch to the user that's speaking.. so if you have an audio-only speaker, it'll switch to their view which happens to be blank.

if that's not the behavior that you want, I recommend customizing these templates to do what you need
