Looking at the guides, I'm not sure if any of these are actually relevant to me? I'm thinking maybe they aren't, because I don't have a "lightdash project connected" yet? So maybe I have to start here?

You're correct:
• The first link you provided is a guide of setting up your dbt project inside existing Lightdash app
• and the second one explains how to self-host the Lightdash app itself
But there are easier ways to try out Lightdash! You could also:
• Register on our cloud: app.lightdash.cloud and setup your dbt project there
• Or setup and run Lightdash app locally by following this guide

TBH I find this guide a bit easier to follow than the one you linked to.
FWIW I don't think it's particularly clear that this page is only for people who are "setting up your dbt project inside existing Lightdash app" - i think it could be beneficial if you added a guide to this page which is for people like me - I don't have a lightdash app (and don't want to use lightdash cloud), but still need some help getting started!
