Everytime I do a pairing session with a junior programmer,
both of us have fun and learn a ton.

So I am thinking about going partially into mentoring,
... but honestly I have no idea where to start
... so I do nothing since years

What’s the main errors wannabe-trainers make?
Has anyone tried it and succeed? If yes why?
Has anyone tried it and failed? If yes why?
What’s the hardest part? Getting clients interested? I’ve heard.
So it’s about hwo to find a niche?
Should I speialize (on Kotlin obviously) or follow the demand?
If you focus on Kotlin, have you tried the JetBrains certification program?
How hard was it?
Is it easier to target beginners (something I like) or mid-level who want to be expert?
Is it better to try the adventure alone or alongside an already established company?

So many questions, no answers, I’m sorry :stuck_out_tongue:

JB certification is not that hard, as long as you really understand the language. It's all about use cases &amp; tradeoffs. If you've gone further than just using the language, you should be OK.
Finding clients is hard, and is all about communication, which I'm not very good at, but the more you show yourself, the more you'll find clients.
The hard parts are :
• Becoming a certified training center, which a lot of French client now demand. We are starting the process, and it's an administrative nightmare.
• Creating pedagogic supports, which must be "original". It took us a loooong time to have suffiscient support for all our trainings, and to get to a format that satisfies our pedagogy style.
Of course, you can instead become a trainer for another training company, but we've found that it just does not work for us financially, as they are recruiting primarily based on trainers prices rather than trainers qualifications, and are offering sometimes laughable compensations and have very high demands (one asked us to provide a 60 slides PP per day of training, a full program, and a set of exercices &amp; corrections, for 200€ per days of training without any retribution for preparation &amp; production).

After 7 years of Kotlin, I don’t think indeed the certification problem will be the issue, so that’s one problem less
(Who at JetBrains work on that by the way?)
The “becoming a certified training center” does sound like a nightmare, I will leave that for later.
The “creating pedagogic support” does sound like a lot of work, but I’m pretty sure I can manage to do it.
Knowing the prices is something I’m terrible at so thanks for calling my attention on it.

Actually I have maybe useful superpower here,
I’m very good at “jouer l’imbécile”
People  contact me all the time on LinkedIn then they tell me they want only senior people.
But they can’t find them for some reason and they are expansive.

So I think I will ask them why they don’t train their juniors instead?
