The beauty of the oob swap is you don't need to worry about any of that. You make a request. The server replies with some HTML. htmx automatically parses that html, sees an element with

hx-swap-oob

and swaps it in place. Doesn't matter if it's an error message or a success message or a copy of the illustrated bible.
