doesn't github have it on the right? are you telling me you're 100% on graphite?? 😉
can you say more about why you prefer it on the left?
b
I wish I was 100% on Graphite. Unfortunately, I still switch back and forth between Github and Graphite right now though. Github has the side bar on the left within the diff view. Only their conversation tab has things on the right. As for why I prefer it on the left, that’s where I’m used to reading code. When I view diffs on Github, the sidebar is on the left. When I view/edit code in VSCode, the sidebar is on the left. When I view/edit code in Neovim, I sometimes have CHADTree open on the left. People who use Jetbrains IDEs will also be used to seeing the sidebar on the left. Slack has its sidebar on the left. Notion has its sidebar on the left. Linear has its sidebar on the left. You get the idea. 🙂

You might have a bit a tunnel-vision though. 🙂 Most of the software you listed I cannot say anything about as I never used them. But what sidebar do you refer to when you say JetBrains IDE? I have several on the left, several on the right, several on the bottom and I toggle all in and out and move them as I need it. There is no "one sidebar on the left". 🙂
b
I think the point stands, at least in my experience. VSCode also has a right sidebar, but it's off by default.
@Bilal Quadri Here's some CSS that will move the sidebar to the left side. But resizing the sidebar will be broken, so if you want to do that, you'll have to disable this CSS, resize, then re-enable. If you use something like Arc Browser, you can make a boost and paste this code in, quick and simple.
Copy code
/* reverse the code view and info panel */
[class^="PullRequestTitleBar_container"] + div {
  flex-direction: row-reverse;
}
/* reverse the buttons and info panel */
.code-diff-container + .info-panel {
  flex-direction: row-reverse;
}
/* remove the resizer, since it won't work anymore */
.info-panel__resizer {
  display: none;
}

i might make a different argument here: a left sidebar pushes the code/main content into the center of the page and it's easier to read without turning your head to the left

Ooh - this is a great discussion! Would be cool to make the PR page more customizable for the user like this 👀

Yes, the centering is the primary value-add. Don’t know why I struggled to put it in those terms, but that’s exactly it. Like a decade ago, I wrote a vim plugin that replicated Sublime’s distraction free mode and the centering aspect was my primary motivation.
d
do you struggle with pages that have a right sidebar, but they center the entire page and have a reasonable max width? (outcome being mostly everything is centered)
b
The closest thing to a UI like you’re describing that I use is Reddit. It centers content while the sidebar on the right makes up one third of the column space. In no other tools where I browse code is the file explorer anywhere other than the left for me. And other than Reddit, I can’t really think of any webapp I use regularly with the primary sidebar on the right.
