Update: This was due to the repo changing names/location. Normally github handles this transparently, but Graphite is having trouble with it. To solve it I updated the new remote name locally:

git remote set-url origin <new_name>

Ideally Graphite would give a warning when remote name differs. Thanks @Jay for the solution.
