I'm probably more curious than going to be helpful But do you know where the enable automerge is coming from? (Attached image) When my team enables automerge on our prs they close when merged. Or maybe that's what you were asking why automerge happens.

Ah yes, we use auto-merge, which we manually enable when the PR is almost ready to go. It's unrelated to the question above, though.
