If you really need 1.6 APIs, you can shadow kotlin-stdlib in your plugin. Not saying it's great but it's an option

If there is no surprise, it should be possible with Gradle 8.0: https://github.com/gradle/gradle/issues/19568

I know it's impossible to guarantee but is it possible to tentatively suggest which quarter 8.0 might come out in?

It's already in the RC so next month or two is my guess... πŸ™‚

Regarding the quarter it’s hard to say. I think it will happen in the second half of the year. There is still 7.5 that has quite some issues still open and it’s likely that there will be also a 7.6 release. So as things stand right now, next month or two might be an optimistic guess.

I believe the answer from @Ken Yee was about the 1.7 of Kotlin and not the 8.0 of Gradle. Note that we will most likely bump Kotlin to 1.7 directly in Gradle 8. But there is no planned date for the moment.
