It should be allowed within `beforeVariants` and `onVariants`

ok well it's not working within onVariants (and I can't get the output when using beforeVariants as we get a VariantBuilder)

I'll probably try to open a bug with a sample on the issue tracker (sorry for the delay between those two messages :smile: )
