I don't know the answer, but I would search for "version cannot contain" in Gradle source code.

So this error probably comes from <https://github.com/gradle/gradle/blob/9206396fd45065a0fd2a2d5398d5cf9345375521/subprojects/publish/src/main/java/org/gradle/api/publish/internal/PublicationFieldValidator.java#L49-L75|PublicationFieldValidator>. And `validInFileName()`  for `version` is called in <https://github.com/gradle/gradle/blob/9206396fd45065a0fd2a2d5398d5cf9345375521/subprojects/maven/src/main/java/org/gradle/api/publish/maven/internal/publisher/ValidatingMavenPublisher.java#L63-L65|ValidatingMavenPublisher>.
