I am not on the Gradle team and cannot speak to whether this pattern will continue, but for reference:
Gradle 3.0 (2016-08-15) dropped support for running on Java 6 (last public update 2013-03)
Gradle 5.0 (2018-11-26) dropped support for running on Java 7 (last public update 2019-07)
Java 8 will continue receiving updates at least until 2026-05
