I changed to
```System.setProperty("my.root", rootDir.parentFile.absolutePath)```
then the build script compiles, but I still do not get this value in Java code when I launch Java code via some gradle task.

So perhaps set a system property inside settings.gradle.kts has no effect when running some main method from a sub project? :thinking_face:

You just set the system property for the Gradle logic.
If you run a main method, that is most probably done by a `JavaExec` task or `javaExec { ... }` block.
Those do not get the system properties from the build process forwarded, you have to configure there what you want / need.
