Replace `compile()` with `implementation()` or `api()`

And as a general recommendation, when doing bigger Gradle upgrades, upgrade to the latest minor version with your current major version, then fix all deprecation warnings, then update to the latest minor version in one major version higher, then reiterate. This should usually give a better upgrade experience than to skip major versions which might have deprecated things that are then removed.
