I think using attributes directly for this is too low level. Instead you probably want to use the higher level feature variants: https://docs.gradle.org/current/userguide/feature_variants.html

Oh, I see. Never tried with Kotlin. Isn't the Kotlin plugin also applying the Java plugin? So it might still work with that. 🙂 I'd try it if I were you before trying to do it low-level.
