The version could also be defined in arbitrary places as you have turing-complete language at hand, and not just a dumb XML.

If you for example restrict yourself to use version catalogs in TOML format, then there might be some plugin around that you could use to programmatically set the version to some given value, but even then I'd simply open the file and set the version manually.
