AFAIK the checksum would be downloaded to verify integrity of the artifact

But, I can see that it used on determining whether to download a newer artifact or not in <https://docs.gradle.org/current/userguide/dynamic_versions.html#sub:declaring_dependency_with_changing_version|changing dependency>

So if the sha loading is slow it will slowdown the whole process
